What is it that makes life so cruel?
Poverty?
Circumstances?
Lack of hope?
Abandonment?
OR
Life itself?
"Place it back. How are you lifting my trunk? Hold it properly. There are valuable artifacts in the luggage. I'll cut the fare, in case of any damage", said the lady.I cheerfully yet with a formal tone replied, "Don't you worry, madam. I've been doing this service since I was 5. I've a sturdily built since childhood. I've carried even heavier trunks. You can ask around. None of the clients has ever complained".
Uncle Jiayi spoke up while cleaning the fish, "yeah, yeah. She is a very strong and responsible girl". The lady gave a sigh of relief and smiled while saying, "okay". I lifted the trunk once again only that now in a seemingly delicate manner and started following the lady.
I was happy that day. It was just a usual day like other days. People were as usual busy doing their small businesses. Aunt Juan was wearing a pale yellow gown that day. She gave me a flower saying that my mother used to love peonies very much, but I was the most beautiful flower in her life. Well, aunt Juan was also very happy that day for don't know what reason. Children were playing in the mud carelessly. One of them accidentally printed his dirty hands on my skirt. The passage was damp because it had rained the previous day. The rim of my skirt also got dirty due to mud and silt on the way. But I was happy. Because, after many days a rich visitor had entered our village and I got the chance to carry luggage for her.
I didn't know her name, or her face as she was wearing a scarf but by the looks of extravagant dressing style and manner of speaking, I could tell that she was from a rich far off country where women were said to be very independent and self-sufficient. Otherwise, what a woman would've been doing in an isolated little mountainous village alone. A glimpse of her lips and teeth told me that she was beautiful. I didn't try to know her because first, I was very professional. And second, my only concern was the fare that she was going to pay me.She was leading the way and I was following her which kind of made me doubt that if it was her first visit, but I didn't ask about it. She was quite fast which I felt thankful for because the trunk was quite heavy. It felt to be overly stuffed. I wondered what kind of artifacts were so heavy.
We passed by the street vendors and some houses. And then we were in wilderness. There was forest in front of us. It was something unique to me. The lady kept the stride pace so did I. We came into the wilderness of the forest. The lady stopped suddenly. We were in front of Yana Temple. At the temple, which despite being the native I had never visited, we paid respects and continued walking towards the destination. Ultimately, we reached the end of the forest and there was no further passage.
We were standing on a cliff. Beside the cliff was that heavenly waterfall which the villagers adored very much. That waterfall was a great treasure to us because it was the sole water source in our village. It was my first time watching it so closely. It was more like feeling it. I forgot about the heavy weight on my head for a few moments. The sound of the waterfall was so surreal and the clear transparent water falling down was an indescribable site. I asked myself what could be purer than the crystal clear water falling down from the peak of a mountain.
"Place the trunk near that tree", said the lady and I snapped out of my thoughts which were so in awe of the nature.
The lady looked at me briefly. Then she went for a small bag inside her outer gown and took out two silver coins which she offered to me. I was surprised. I had only seen two silver coins with aunt Juan's husband once when he had first come back to village after doing business in the city. These coins were bigger than the ones I saw with aunt Juan's husband.
Seeing me hesitating and surprised the lady said, "you are getting paid for your hard work. Now you can go back. I don't need you any farther."
"Do you need anything else?" I asked with the mixed emotions of surprise and gratitude.
"No", she replied, "Isn't it very beautiful here?"
"yeah", I exclaimed taking in the beautiful scenery around me. My eyes full of admiration for nature."I've been here before. This is my hideout."
