Once the dessert plates were clean and empty and Dumbledore had made his announcements for the year ("For the list of all four hundred and thirty six prohibited items please consult the bulletin board in Mr. Filch's office."), the prefects from the four houses got up to direct first years to their dormitories.
"That pudding was fantastic." sighed James, contentedly. "Almost as good as my mum's."
"Sherbert lemon." said the Gryffindor prefect once they had climbed the stairs and they were standing in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady.
"Hmm." said the Fat Lady, peering down at the first years with narrowed eyes. "Last year's first years weren't this short."
"Just let us through, woman." snapped the prefect.
"I won't waste my charms on you miserable lot." she sighed, rolling her heavily painted dark eyes, and swang aside to reveal the round portrait hole.
Sirius's jaw almost hit the floor when he saw the common room. It was simply marvelous. He'd never seen this much red work out together this perfectly.
A cheerful fire burned in the grate where a couple of the older students were playing a game of Wizard Chess. The scarlet and gold drapes that hung from the walls of the circular walls had a warming effect.
Most of the squashy armchairs in the cozy circular common room were taken so Sirius, James and Remus went up the boy's staircase to check out their room and start unpacking, if possible, given they were all feeling soporific.
The first thing Sirius noticed about their assigned dorm room was a rather huge backside.
A boy was at the foot of the furthest bed and rummaging in his trunk. He looked up when he heard them approach. It was the kid who fell in the lake.
"Hi." he said in a squeaky voice. "I'm Peter Pettigrew."
"Hey." James said, giving Peter a nod before starting to look around the room.
Sirius too nodded politely at the boy and made his way to the four poster closest to the window, and sat on the edge of it before lying back down.
"How come you get the best bed in the room?" grumbled James, plopping down on the one next to Sirius's. "It's really not fair."
"Well, it may have escaped your notice but life isn't fair." Sirius said before kicking off his shoes.
The boys didn't stay up much after that ("unpacking be damned") and went to bed early.

Sirius woke up to the cold grey light of down, staring up at the canopy of his four poster. It took him a few seconds to remember everything that had happened yesterday and a crazy grin tugged at his lips. I'm finally here. At Hogwarts. And I'm in Gryffindor.
Sirius has always been creative when it comes to coming up with ways of making his mother mad but he has really outdone himself this time.
Speaking of which, Sirius is going to have to tell his father and mother about being sorted into Gryffindor. But he didn't want to do it now because he didn't want to leave his toasty cocoon and he was a little scared of their reactions, whatever he might have been saying earlier.
Sirius turned over to get more comfortable and fell into a deep sleep again.
