"Well . . ." said James after Blake left. "We've been friends for a very long time now and I think it's safe to say that we have each other's backs and will do almost anything for each other. Like a wolf pack. What do you say, Remus?"
Remus didn't even bother to look up from Transfigurations Today. "Hmm."
"And this wolf pack of ours needs a name too. Don't you think?" James continued when he couldn't get much in the way of a reaction out of Remus.
Remus still didn't look up or respond in any way.
Maybe Remus wasn't a werewolf after all and Sirius had lugged a book that weighs a ton for no reason. Or maybe they shouldn't have let James handle this.
Sirius kicked James from under the table to make him shut up but caught Peter instead. Peter let out a small strangled whimper but didn't say anything so Sirius silently apologized to him then proceeded to kick his initial target, James. James gave Sirius a death glare but seemed to have gotten the message because he didn't say anything. He just kicked Sirius back.
Sirius swallowed back a groan and internally vowed revenge for his leg before facing Remus. "Hey, Remus." he said, turning in his seat a little so he was facing him. "Why don't you stop wolfing down your food? You might choke."
"What are you lot talking about? I'm not even eating . . ." Remus started to say but stopped and looked up from his book, startled.
"We know." smirked James.
"How?" asked Remus, his cheeks paling.
"It was nothing." said James, dismissing all of their meetings, strategizing and efforts with a wave of his egg covered fork, flicking some of the scrambled egg on Sirius and Peter's faces. "A few minutes of research was enough."
Remus looked at the three of them in turn, trying to gauge something from their expressions. Then he asked, "And you don't hate me? But I'm a werewolf." He whispered out the last word like it pained him to say it.
"And I have the attention span of a dead flobberworm." said James with a shrug, simultaneously stuffing more food into his mouth.
"I talk in my sleep." added Peter.
"And I come from a family who's entirety were in Slytherin." Sirius pointed out while jerking his thumb to where his cousins and brother sat.
"See?" said James, taking a two second long break to swallow his food before speaking again. "We all have something weird going on with us. Why didn't you just tell us?"
"Well . . . It's not exactly something you want to shout from roof tops. And . . . and I thought you wouldn't want me around anymore if you knew." said Remus, hanging his head and wringing his fingers together. "I mean, how many people would take well to having a werewolf sleep in their dorm?"
Peter cleared his throat uncomfortably at that.
"Are you kidding me?" screamed James then lowered his voice when a few of the older kids glared at him. "Werewolves are awesome."
"Most people would use the word 'monsters'." said Remus, looking up at them.
"Please. You stir your tea exactly twenty one times and use spells to iron, fold and color code your socks." Sirius said. "Forgive me if I'm not exactly trembling at your feet."
Remus managed a small smile at that. "How long have you know?"
"About two weeks now."
Remus bit his bottom lip. "And you still want us to be friends?"
