So I write a lot of oneshots for this fandom but I don't post all of them. Usually the ones I prompt myself- I don't post. This is one of those I didn't think I would post but decided to anyways...

The only noise heard through the castle was the sound of pounding rain hitting the windows. Followed by a deafening crack of thunder and flash of white struck lightning.

It hit the windows with little clicking noises to announce its arrival earlier that night, and it hadn't stopped dripping.

The rest of the castles residences had fallen asleep long ago, except for the young daughter of the Master of Caraval that sat awake in her canopy bed, late at night.

Destiny had laid in the crisp navy blue sheets for hours trying to fall asleep since she was put to bed. She had tried to tell her mother she wasn't tired, but because she was four, and was a bit drowsy, she had found her way to sleep eventually.

Yet Destiny had awakened just now. Not from the thunder or rain but a nightmare. A quite vivid one if she recalled correctly.

All she could remember was being chased in a forest abundantly alone. She had called for her parents, but no one responded. Yelling the names of her Aunt Scarlett and Uncle Julian, but not a peep was returned. Destiny didn't want to remember it, so she stopped thinking about it.

All she knew is that it had made her heart beat in places it had never before.

Another crack of lightning sounded through the slightly opened curtained windows. Spreading its thunderous noises throughout the dim halls of the castle.

Destiny threw the soft covers from her legs and readied herself to leave. She sat on the edge of the tall bed and put one foot down before the other. She was only four and reaching the floor from the bed and vise versa was still difficult due to her height.

Nonetheless, the sound of her bare footsteps echoed through her silent room. Threatening the sound of the creaking rain against the glassy windows.

She ran all the way to the door. Grabbing the handle and pulling it with all the force she could gather. It was a bit heavy, but she had gotten past it.

Shutting the ruff door as quietly as she could behind her, Destiny walked as silently as she could to her parents room.

She cowered as she looked down the hall from behind the stone wall to see a loud flash of white and a loud noise of thunder. Tears were threatening the corners of her eyes, warning her to make it to safety quickly.

Destiny made a dash for her parents, pulling up the deep red carpet that flowed throughout every corridor and hallway in the castle, as she went.

She pulled the door knob as hard as she could attempting to open it. After several moments that felt like years, she got it opened.

Her footsteps got louder as she perilously ran all the way to her mother, as if her life depended on it.

To a four year old, it felt like it did.

Destiny lifted hand small hand and tugged on the light blue sleeve of her mothers nightgown, silently whispering her name.

"what?" Tella murmered phonetically.

Destiny pouted, "I had a nightmare"

Suddenly Tella sat up with widened eyes.

"What was it about?" She said all to quickly.

Destiny didn't understand why her mother was asking such specific questions, but didn't ponder it to long. Another crack of heathing thunder made Destiny press herself closer to the large bed and put her arms up wide. She made her hands into fists then opened them repeatedly, signaling she wanted up.

Tella put her hands around Destiny's delicate rib cage and hoisted her upwards into her lap.

"What happened in your dream, my little butterfly?" Tella spoke, the sound of word mother like words were slightly muffled from the rain asking for entrance on the windows.

"I don't remember, but I was running through a forest and no one came when I called"

Her mother tilted her head slightly and ran her hand through Destiny's midnight black curls.

"I can promise you, I'll never let that happen"

Destiny looked down for a moment through her dark eyelashes. It's not that she didn't want to believe her mother, but the nightmare was all to real for it to never happen.

It was one of those awful moments in time that only lasted a few minutes but stretched to an eternity.

Her mother leaned in and pressed her lips to Destiny's forehead, then pulled away.

"If you don't believe me, believe your father. I'm certain he would unleash a rage so powerful hell would freeze over, if anyone ever brought harm to his little butterfly"

She laughed and Tella shushed her with an uncontrollable smiled plastered on her face.

"Where is he?" Destiny said once she looked to the empty spot in the bed where her father usually was whenever she had a nightmare.

Tella tilted her head and hummed, "he's out doing.... things"

It was Destiny's turn to tilt her head, "what things?"

"He's at an event"

"What event?"

Her mother rolled her eyes murmuring something Destiny was to small to hear.

"Something called Caraval"

Destiny's eyes lit up. Her father had told her stories of Caraval. From what he had said it was supposedly a magical place where reality was bent to the will of the people who played. Which sounded magnificent to Destiny. But when Aunt Scarlett would walk into the room, she always told Destiny it was a place where people were tricked. While it was true it is magical, magic comes at a price. Always saying something like she would understand when she's older.

"Why does Aunt Scarlett not want me to know about Caraval?"

Tella's eyes widened, "Fates" she murmured.

Destiny repeated the word, confused.

Her mother hushed her, "Fates are awful people. You'll be able to tell you've meant one by the feeling in your stomach. And if you ever do, run as fast as you can to us. If we're not there just run. And never look back"

Destiny cowered in fear. The Fates didn't seem like nice people from the way her mother described them. Which was strange because Aunt Scarlett always told her the world was a beautiful place where mean people are just misunderstood.

"Maybe their just nice people in disguise. Aunt Scarlett says that about the mean librarians in the book rooms".

Tellas lips turned upwards as she pulled Destiny into her chest, embracing her, "please don't ever grow up"

Destiny smiled. She didn't understand what that meant. From what she had seen all adults have their lives completely together and can do whatever they want. They didn't have to take naps or listen to boring lectures. Destiny wanted to grow up.

But for her mother she wouldn't...

   "Ok"
