After giving my Dad a final check-up, Mr. Choi finally seemed relieved. We were currently seated in my parents' shared bedroom. The bedroom was fully furnished on a meager budget but it was full of warmth I had seen in many years.
On the back wall was a mural, a tree with every color of fall leaf imaginable and a few more besides.
On the crude pine bed was a hand embroidered orange cover. From every wall smiled black and white photographs of me as a child with Mom, Dad and my little sister, Jenica.
Then Jenica bustled in with a tray of sandwiches and cake, her face so tired but wearing the same smile she always reserved for our family.
"Mr. Kim, you will be absolutely fine within next hour." Mr. Choi said as he packed his stuff and zipped up his medical kit.
"I told you kids that I'm fine. You both get worried for nothing." My Dad smiled as he ruffled mine and Jenny's hair in affection, though I figured that the smile wasn't genuine. He didn't have those creases around his eyes.
"I think it's time for you to actually tell them the truth." My Dad's face went pale as my Uncle finished his sentence.
"Truth? What are you hiding from us?" I asked quickly, almost immediately, as I narrowed my eyes towards my Dad. My heartbeat had started racing as a trail of bad thoughts rushed through my head.
"Ah it's nothing baby, he's saying about something else. Mr. Choi, you didn't need to say that." He nervously laughed.
"No, I'm your doctor. I won't do anything bad for you. Tell them now."

Standing on my balcony, I pressed my palms against the cold railing and shot my head up ahead. It was about to rain. The weather was having a perfect synchronisation with my inner feelings and turmoil. I flickered my gaze from my old wrist scars to the sky and then back to the scars, suddenly getting an urge to leave some fresh, newer, marks.
Dad was hiding something so imperative from us? And I kept talking to him rudely and disrespectfully. I kept misbehaving with him, disobeying him. Why didn't I ever pay attention? How could I not realise that something was wrong? Was I being too selfish by just caring about my problems and pain that I didn't even have a minute to spare some time and understand what's going in in the life of people around me? His turmoils and dilemmas. My little stupid brain obscured the understanding, of his love and affection he always have had notwithstanding to bear such a incurable disease.
I felt so stupid and miserable of myself. That night I decided to give all of my unconditional love and support to my Dad from now on. Sure he had also committed a lot of mistakes in his part but, however, it was totally my responsibility to do anything and everything for him.
Sighing, I tried hard pushing away Uncle Choi's words which were echoing in my head on loop. It was like a record player with a broken controller.
"Mr. Kim is suffering from a condition which refers to a problem with a rubbery disc between the spinal bones. This occurs when the soft centre of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tougher exterior casing. Some herniated discs cause no symptoms. Others can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg."
