Their growls were like a war song. Powerful, demanding, announcing there was no need for our people to lose their calm. They were protecting us.

But I couldn't hear his growl.

Shivering at the thought of the King's of Death's death, I had to swallow a scream. The people in the castle were roaming around like restless animals.

We had no clue what was going on, we didn't even know when it would end. And most of all, we didn't know if it would ever end.

We had to wait. I had to wait.

"Irma."

It wasn't a scream of despair, but it wasn't an acknowledgment either.

I wasn't expecting to be relieved to hear his voice, but I was. It meant that at least one of them made it out alive. My heartbeat picked up again at the thought of my mate's death. I was not going to cry. No matter what would happen next, I was not going to show my weakness to anyone.

Afraid of the state he was in, I couldn't turn around and face him.

"How is he?" I waited for his answer for a while. With every second passing by, my fear was stronger. Every second meant one more irrational thought. Every second was torture. I could almost imagine him dead, lying on the ground, lifeless.

I felt my blood boiling when he laughed.

When his hand touched my shoulder I turned around instantly. Ready to fight him, even if I was aware I had no chance to hurt him.

"If he would get hurt, you'll know."

I didn't answer. I knew he was right. I knew I would feel his pain, if there was any. My connection with him was strong enough to feel what he does.

There was nothing. No pain, no regret, no fear, no anger.

I could see the amusement in his eyes. My realization was clear to him and he couldn't hold his chuckle.

"I have something for you." His red eyes turned into black when he said those words and I knew that I wasn't going to talk to his human side anymore.

"What do you want in return?" After what he did, Louis couldn't be trusted. I wasn't afraid of him, but I was aware he wasn't going to give anything to me for free.

"Nothing, dear Queen." His voice was deeper than I expected and I watched the beast in amazement. Louis always acted like a human in front of me, but this time, watching his dark side I knew that if I do or say something wrong, I would die before I could even finish my sentence.

"Every King has his own book. This is my brother's." There was no guilt in his eyes, even if giving me the book meant betraying his brother. There were numerous stories about their beginning, but they were all different. No one knew the truth, but themselves. Humans, wolves, vampires, witches, demons, sometimes even angels, they all tried to write about them, but no one truly could. The Kings had one book that held the truth, but no one knew which was the right one to believe. They all spoke different about their beginning, but they all said the same thing about the Kings of the Six Kingdoms. They were all deadly.

There was one more thing everyone knew for sure. The King of Death never allowed anyone to live long enough to end his story.

"Read it." When he spoke again, the floor moved, almost like we were in the middle of an earthquake. "Or I'll make sure you do." Turning his back on me, Louis disappeared out of the door, leaving me alone on the roof. For the first time since I met him, Louis was not asking me for something. He was ordering me.
