Crap.
Kenma quickly brushed his teeth and threw on some clothes. Breakfast had already started, but Kuroo had just woken him up.
"Yo, puddin' head, if you don't hurry the frick up, I'm going to leave without you," the third-year threatened without looking up from his phone.
"Then just leave, I am hurrying the frick up," Kenma replied, his annoyance was audible in his voice. Even though he just said he'd be fine without Kuroo, the second-year was quite glad his friend was waiting up for him. If Kuroo were to leave right now, Kenma would probably have to sit with strangers, which he hated. The dark-haired teen knew that which is exactly why he waited for his childhood friend. The setter was grateful, he just had a hard time admitting it.
"Done?" Kuroo asked as he finally looked up from his smartphone, Kenma simply nodded as he unplugged his phone from the charger and took off in the direction of the auditorium.
The two of them were still able to find a free spot in one of the corners, they were the last ones to arrive. The two of them were surrounded by people who didn't seem to want to socialize, most of the chatter came from the center of the auditorium, were Kuroo would usually drag Kenma. Meaning the two of them found a quiet place to talk, unlike the usual.
Naturally, Shoyo had already sat down with his teammates instead of waiting for Kenma, which the second-year perfectly understood as it was his own fault he overslept.
"Are you staring at the tangerine?" the tall third-year asked the second-year setter while raising an eyebrow. Kenma simply looked back at him in surprise, "oh, was I staring?" he asked, sounding quite surprised himself.
"Yeah," Kuroo snickered at his childhood friend. "You totally were, so what's up between the two of you?" the black-haired third-year asked his best friend as he sipped his orange juice.
"What's up between the two of us? I mean we've been playing Animal Crossing a lot this week, that's all that's up, why?"
"God Kenma, I can't believe you're so oblivious. What I meant; what are you two to each other? Are you guys dating or nah?"
The second-year almost choked on his toast, genuinely surprised by Kuroo's straightforward question. "D-dating? No, I- What-," the setter had a hard time responding to his friend's question. This was due to the shock along with the piece of bread that was stuck in the back of his throat.
Dating? No, that was out of the question, there was no way Shoyo was interested in Kenma like that. Even if he was, Kenma had no experience with dating, the setter could only guess he was terrible at it. Dating was all about reading social cues and stuff and the second-year setter totally sucked at that. Not only that but Shoyo lived very far away, how was that supposed to work out? Nah, the relationship the two of them had should be described as something else, comfortable friends maybe? That seemed to fit quite well, Kenma was very comfortable around the redhead. Spending time with him, or even talking to him just made the second-year feel safe and brought him joy.
"If you're not dating, then what are you?" the third-year asked, raising an eyebrow once again. God, he seemed amused, with that annoying smirk of his.
"Shoyo and I are comfortable friends," Kenma replied, restating the term he had just come up with, which honestly sounded better in his head.
Kuroo looked up at his friend with a surprised expression this time, the amusement seemed to be taken over by confusion, "comfortable what?"
"Y-yeah," Kenma replied as he mentally prepared himself for the explanation he was about to give. "Shoyo and I are comfortable friends, we're not dating, we just enjoy spending time with each other. Talking to him makes me feel happy and safe, we're comfortable with each other."
