Chapter 23: Red
Reixel’s P.O.V.
"Reixel?"
That voice. It scraped against the silence, a familiar melody in the oppressive air. It was her. Hope, a tiny flickering flame, ignited within the cold ashes of despair. I forced my eyes open, the dim light of the room assaulting my senses. And there she was. Ally, standing before me, her face etched with a smile that could rival the sun.
Without a second thought, I surged forward, wrapping my arms around her in a hug so tight, it threatened to steal her breath.
"Oh my God, Ally!" I choked out, the words thick with relief and joy.
I wasn't alone anymore. The suffocating weight of isolation lifted, replaced by a surge of renewed hope. I felt her hand gently stroking my back, a comforting gesture that soothed the raw edges of my fear.
"We can get out of here," she said softly, pulling back slightly and settling down in front of me. I took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to compose myself. I nodded, a silent promise to focus, to fight alongside her.
"Have you seen Celestria?"
Ally's smile faltered, and she shook her head.
"No, not yet. I was with Zcharlett earlier," she replied, her eyes clouding over.
"Zcharlett's here? What's she doing here? Where is she? Is she okay?" The questions tumbled out, a frantic barrage fueled by anxiety and a desperate need to know everyone was safe.
Ally avoided my gaze, her silence a heavy, unspoken answer. My hand flew to my mouth, stifling a sob that threatened to erupt. Images of Zcharlett, her fierce determination, her unwavering loyalty, flashed through my mind. Ally gently rubbed my shoulder, a silent offering of comfort.
"Don't worry, I know the way to the exit room. Zcharlett and I figured it out based on the clues," she said, her voice steady and reassuring. I looked up, my heart pounding with a mixture of disbelief and renewed hope.
"R-really?" I stammered, scrambling to my feet. Ally mirrored my movement, her eyes scanning the rows of identical doors that lined the room.
"Yes. But first, we need to find the others," she said, her voice full of concern as she turned her attention onto me. "Right, I have something to tell you. It's about French," I began, the words caught in my throat.
I lowered my head, shame and grief washing over me in a suffocating wave. The corners of my eyes burned with unshed tears.
"What about her? What happened? Where is she?" Ally's voice was laced with concern, her fingers tightening around my hand. "Please, tell me," she pleaded.
"She's dead," I finally managed to say, the words a strangled whisper. The dam inside me broke, and tears streamed down my face, hot and heavy.
"She...saved me," I added, the confession tearing through me, raw and painful.
Ally pulled me into another hug, holding me close as my body shook with sobs. "Shh, it's okay, Reix," she murmured, her voice soothing and gentle.
"No, it's my fault... because of me, she... d-died," I insisted, my voice muffled against her shoulder. I buried my face in her neck, unable to stem the relentless flow of tears.
