chapter sixteen
[monday mourning]

The next morning, we found ourselves at the docks. I was obviously thinking about last night. The guilt was starting to weigh in on me, JJ was my best friend; I don't understand why I couldn't just man up and tell him about my problems.

Maybe it was because I was scared that he would look at me differently, I know that he frowns upon hard drugs. Or maybe it was because he had his own problems, his life was hard and I didn't want to complicate it even further and make him worry about me.

"What's this do?" JJ asks, pointing to a large red button on the drone.
Pope looked at the boy beside me in horror, slapping his hand away.
"Don't touch that! I'm trying to work this thing out." Pope spoke, glaring at JJ but turning around and getting back to work on trying to figure out how the fuck this drone worked.

"God bless geeks, Pope. Truly man. I mean, what would we do without you to control the drone?" JJ said, poking Pope in the side; teasing him.
"You know, it's technically an ROV." Pope smiled back at JJ, obviously proud that he knew something JJ didn't.

"In the end, they are all the same thing anyway." JJ stated, turning away from Pope and facing me instead.
"I'm starting to think that maybe you should go to summer school?" I suggested, raising my eyebrows. JJ defiantly wasn't the smartest kid, but he wasn't the dumbest either. I was just messing around and teasing him.
"Yeah, you'd be coming with me." He replied, frowning at the thought of summer school.

"Hey, once we get footage of the wreck we'll bring it to a lawyer in town and file a formal claim."John B spoke, in the water.
"It's bullshit, why do we have to do that?" I asked, looking at my brother
"Well, there is the maritime salvage law. You can't just go to the bottom of the ocean and dig a bunch of shit up." JJ replies instead, looking at me as he placed his hand on my thigh to get my attention.

"I know, I know. Lawyers aren't cheap tho." I frowned, we had no money for food, how the fuck were we suppose to hire a lawyer?
"But as soon as a lawyer sees the footage they'll work for a comp free." John B says, managing to calm down my nerves a little bit.

"How do you know all that?" JJ asks, turning to John B. I smiled, his hand still on my leg. It's the little things that matter.
"Cause my dad said it, like a million times." John B replied, in a duh tone and putting emphasise on the world million.

"The tether is like, so long. In the wrong weather this thing could get pushed around." Pope frowned, looking at the rest of us.
"It's okay, we can go at dead calm." John B states. I admired him sometimes, he always found a new way to climb over whatever hurdle was in our way.
"At slack tide?" Kie asks, motioning towards the sky.

It was dark, stormy. I don't know if another storm was coming or not, but i sure hoped not. I wasn't deathly afraid of storms but my heart ached for my friends, i constantly wondered if they were safe.

"So now we just gotta wait for the right weather." Pope groaned, watching the sky.
"And today is defiantly not that day." I sighed. I wanted to find this gold, to find the royal merchant. I was getting tired of not eating, tired of watching my friends suffer.
I use to think that this was just some wild fantasy, but every moment that passed it just kept getting more real.

"Should we go to your dad's before the storm comes?" I suggested, looking at Pope and JJ. Pope and JJ needed to deliver grocies or something, and I was just going to tag along and annoy him.

━━

"Ya'll get these groceries over to figure 8, get straight back here when you're done. No fishing." Heyward instructed, placing two grocery bags into JJ's arms. "I promised delivery by this afternoon, these rich folk don't like waiting."
