After being excommunicated by the Matriarch, Emperor Maximilian I of the Occultorian Empire (the legitimate government of the Supernatural World) retrieves a special artefact to blackmail her.
Meanwhile, Jessica still attempts to break out of prison, but has no luck.
At the same time, Empress Lilith berates Irina the Magician for her failed assassination attempts and sends her back to the Imperial Capital to try again - as a clown in disguise.
On the church front, the newly-elected Matriarch Catherine III is humbled when she not only agrees to lift the excommunication and the interdict after being blackmailed, but is also forced to accept a new place in the Order of Precedence.
As Book 7 ends, Emperor Max is once again in charge of his own Empire, but is still burdened by the enormity of reuniting six more provinces in order to make the Empire whole again, thus restoring the balance by preventing supernatural creatures from spilling into the Natural World.
