Cassie and Beth are looking for a new life away from Fallen Field, a busy city. Beth had been an orphan for quite a while... well... her dad hasn't passed, he's just not very present. Cassie doesn't have a mom, but like Beth, she has a dad. Her dad is different though. He's tough on her, worse than a slave working on a corn field half-past noon. He beats her and tries to keep her wrapped around his finger. One day Cassie finally said no and asked Beth to runaway with her, to be a stowaway together. Beth, of course, said yes. They were closer than two peas-in-a-pod. Cassie had helped Beth with speaking up. Beth tried and tried to help Cassie to do the same, but she was scared of her father, and knew the punishment that would come if she ever did talk back. That's why, on the way to work, the two girls would soon vanish from Fallen Field. Just to end up in the sleepy town of Springsville.
