"That's not fair," Addy argued from the passenger seat, not even bothering to put her seatbelt on. She was mad and drunk and she wanted answers for what Michael had done.
"You really don't get it, do you?" Michael laughed bitterly. "I told you, Ellis. I fuckin' used you. End of story."
"No it isn't," Addy shot back, not missing a beat. "It's not the end of the story. It's never the end of the story. Because if it was the end I wouldn't be here in the passenger seat of your truck. You didn't use me, I know you didn't. There's something you're not telling me and I want to know what it is." Michael just sighed extremely loudly, wishing she'd just shut up. He was still very much in love with her and still very much wanted to kiss her but God damn, she was annoying when she was drunk.
"Not tonight, Ellis," he sighed. He decided to let go of the wheel for a second because if he gripped any harder he was sure he would've broken his own knuckles. He gripped back on after a second, reaching over to turn the radio louder to drown out the thoughts that were telling him to tell Addy the truth. She reached over a few seconds later, turning it back down.
"No, tonight. Now. Because if you tell me we might have another chance, Michael. And I know you want another chance. But there's something holding you back." Michael's shoulders were shaking so bad now that he almost needed to pull over because he wasn't sure he could drive. He wanted to tell her so badly and the truth was on the tip of his tongue, but he just couldn't. He knew Luke would kick his ass if he ever found out and he wasn't really up for that any time soon. Michael wanted another chance and it made his heart race when he knew Addy did too, but the risks seemed to great.
Without thinking, he pulled into someones driveway and turned around, deciding to drive to his house instead of hers. Michael could feel Addy staring at him from across the car but he didn't care anymore - he was about to do something he knew he was going to regret and he wanted to be in his own house when he did it so he didn't feel as bad. When they pulled up Michael shut the truck off and got out, walking up to the front door without waiting for Addy. She stepped slowly out of the car and closed the door, assuming that this must be his house.
It was much smaller than hers, but for some reason she felt a sense of closeness inside the little house when she walked in the front door. It was simple, with only two bedrooms and one bathroom, a kitchen, living room and small basement, but it felt far more valuable than her big home that was filled with nothing but lonliness.
"Can I ask why we're here or aren't you planning on telling me?" Addy asked, taking in her surroundings.
"I was planning on telling you the truth," he said, walking down the hall and turning into what seemed to be his bedroom. It was about the same size as hers, with a bed and a dresser and a desk. Nothing too special. He took his jacket off and threw it onto his bed, sitting down on it and rubbing his hands over his face as he sighed loudly. Addy just stood awkwardly in the doorway until Michael told her to sit at his desk and she did. He stood up, closing the door behind her and sat down again, breathing heavily.
"Um," Addy started, not really prepared for this. Michael was about to tell her something and by the looks of it, it was something pretty serious. "Go ahead, I guess."
"That song," he started, referring to the one that he'd turned off in the car. "That song was my ex girlfriend's favorite song. We danced to it in the kitchen like, all the time." Addy nodded, swallowing hard but signaling that she understood. "But she cheated on me. At first I didn't really know; actually I didn't know for a whole six months. I was kind of an idiot. But she cheated on me for a long time and I didn't even fuckin' know, Ellis. You'd think after dating for a year she wouldn't look for someone else or someone better, you know? I just wasn't enough." Addy nodded again.
"I'm sorry," she mumbled, knowing now that this was only the beginning of a really, really long story.
"Don't be," Michael said. "But apparently Luke Hemmings was enough. So I broke up with her and she dated Luke." Addy's eyes got wide and she almost choked on the water she was drinking when the words escaped Michael's mouth.
"Holy shit, she cheated on you with Luke? Does he know that?" Addy asked, coughing and leaning foward. She was interested now.
"No," Michael responded. "And I don't think he ever will. They broke up too after she cheated on him with another guy. She just didn't fuckin' quit. Ever." Addy nodded, remembering the day that Luke called her and asked her to come over because he'd been through a shitty breakup with his girlfriend. Addy also remembered wanting to punch her in the face. "So then I felt like I wasn't enough for anyone. She fucked me up really bad," Michael continued. "And god forbid I ever got a break from everything else - I needed an escape, Ellis, and so I went to the only person who I knew had one. It was hard for me to even talk to him without punching him in the face, but he had something I needed. I went to Luke."
"Oh my god," Addy whispered, knowing that she wasn't going to enjoy hearing the rest of the story. She had a feeling she didn't know Luke as well as she thought she did.
"Yeah. And you're really, really not supposed to know this," Michael managed, leaning forward so he could speak quieter. "But I have to tell you because you need to know for your own safety. I was down in the dumps and I went to Luke because I knew he could get me drugs. So I bought weed and stuff from Luke and then he offered me a job selling them, but like, not just weed. He had access to fucking everything. And Addy, fuck, I know you don't want to hear this from a guy you made out with like a week ago, but I took the job." Addy just nodded, not even acting surprised. She was mostly just trying to take this all in; it felt like she was ripping a bandaid off and there was a painful under layer that hadn't quite healed. It was like Luke and Michael had made a gigantic mess and didn't quite know how to clean themselves up.
"So I sold them," Michael continued. "Luke gave me a thousand dollars worth of all that shit and I tried my best to sell them, but the problem was that I only sold a quarter of them. And now Luke's in deep shit with his boss because I didn't pay him back on time. I was supposed to have the money two months ago but I didn't and I still don't. But I told him that I want out and he said if I brought him the money I'd be out, no questions asked. I owe Luke a thousand dollars by the end of this month and he told me if I don't have it he'd bring you into it because you're the thing I care about most." Addy felt her heartbeat speed up, now realizing that she'd been unwillingly pulled into some weird drug dealing triangle.
"Wait, I don't want to be a part of this," Addy said, her voice shaking. She sounded like she was on the verge of tears and Michael could see that she was really scared. He reached out slowly and grabbed her hand, helping her to calm down.
"No, no," he said softly, looking into her eyes. "No, I know you don't, Addy. That's why I broke up with you in the hallway that day. Because I knew that if I was mean to you and didn't tell you why that you wouldn't come back. But you did, Ellis, because you always gotta fuckin' ruin my plans, don't you?" he laughed softly, and Addy calmed down a little bit.
"So does that mean you, like, still want to be around me? Or did you actually use me," Addy asked, sounding unsure. Michael just smiled, throwing his hands up.
"Yes, I still want to be around you."
"So what happens next?" Addy asked, suddenly realizing that she was now a small part of this whether she liked it or not.
"I don't know," Michael admitted truthfully. "But you were never supposed to know and I need you to stay quiet, okay?" Addy just nodded, still kind of scared. Michael pulled her in for a hug, sighing into her hair. "God Ellis," he said. "I missed you."
