Chapter 2

「Perhaps bacon is my enemy」

After confirming my recovery, the maids helped me prepare for the morning. They were with me even when I take a bath. I found it awkward at first, but since the bathroom was as large as a public bath, I imagined being in an onsen with other women. It's a good thing that the maids always assist me, for my vision was getting sparkly when I walk.

I was dressed quite fancy afterwards, as expected of an Umphrey. The places that hurt before did not feel pain now. My wounds heal amazingly fast, only leaving faint scars.

I was then escorted to the dining hall to have breakfast. I haven't even reached my destination but the smell of bacon and eggs lingered on my nose. Upon arrival, Sir Marlon and Lady Gertrud were already seated. They seemed to be waiting for me.

They seemed delighted by my entrance. "It seems that you're okay now, Sherbet! Come join us!" said Gertrud.

As per usual, I tried to remain calm despite millions of inquiries running through my mind. I must seek answers to all my questions, but I must do so one by one.

I smiled at both of them and curtsied. Good thing I know noble manners and etiquette from acting in the past.

I thanked them for saving me and for being great hosts. I also apologized for any trouble I caused. Sir Marlon told me not to mind anything and I was ushered to dine at the table.

I see Lady Gertrud eating her vegetables elegantly, but not with 100% finesse. She still makes audible clinking with her tableware. I suddenly remember my etiquette instructor slapping my hand when I made mistakes like this. In the real world I am well-known for my role as Lady Gertrud, and even won awards for portraying her. My acting for this character gained me a lot of more supporters and therefore more popularity.

Elegance, gracefulness, finesse. I have mastered all of these.

She looked at me, probably noticing how I was staring at her, and gave a fresh smile. I returned the smile. She then advised me to request for anything I want.

I was judging her just now. Either I'm great at concealing myself or she's pure-hearted to not even notice.

I nodded politely. Her actions may not be on par with my acting but she is the real heroine in the flesh. She is the epitome of goodness.

While thinking of this, my breakfast was served. I figured I was right about the breakfast menu. The usual breakfast, bacon and eggs, along with cuisine I couldn't name. The amount of tableware, the table setting, and the ambience scream rich. The plating looks like heaven. They served bread too. If my memory serves right, the family Umphrey owns a franchise of bakeries in this nation. Naturally, I tried the bread first to have a taste of one of the most iconic food in the series.

Heavens, it's so good.

I then tried to slice the bacon on my plate but I seemed to have missed. My vision is somehow messing with me. Sometimes I see stuff like after images, and at other times I'm certain of the location of something but when I pursue it I miss by a millimeter or so, just like the stair last night and now, this freaking bacon. I decided to feel the plate instead of using both my fork and knife. Finally, I was able to put my fork in place and started slicing.
