Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over []all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. - Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV)
The first thing that God gave man was His identity. What you identify with is so important that you begin to function by what you are called. God could have made the birds in His image or beasts of the land, but He decided to make you in His likeness. I want you to pause for a minute and just take that revelation in.
One of the coolest things that somebody ever said to me was, "Robby, you resemble your daddy." I felt so special. Like, I look like my daddy? My dad is the coolest person I have ever met. He teaches music. He loves making jokes. He is kind. He is a great listener. He is the biggest supporter in my family. My dad will support you so hard, you'd think that he started your project. That's just how my dad is. To image a man as great as my dad is an honor; one I couldn't live up-to. If I have such great joy in resembling my earthly Father, how much more my Heavenly Father? The creator of Heaven and Earth.
God created you to be like Him. That is why when Adam sinned against God, it was so painful. It gave God a heartache. Like, "Why would my boy disobey me like that?" Sometimes we do not think about the consequences of Adam's sin on God. God and Adam had a fellowship so close that nothing came in-between them. Adam was literally in the presence of God. God visited Adam, and He didn't have to look for Him. Adam was so attuned to God that the Father knew exactly where His son was. He never needed to ask or inquire of him. God just knew where to find His son. But when sin happened, God's relationship with His son changed.
Where are you?
Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" - Genesis 3:9 (NKJV)
I do not think God was asking about Adam's location. I mean, He is God, He is All-knowing! I think God wanted to know about their relationship. Like, "What did you just do, son?" The Scripture before verse 9 reveals something so amazing. I think you want to look at it for a bit.
And they heard the []sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the []cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. - Genesis 3:8 (NKJV)
The relationship that God had in the garden with His kids was so beautiful that He could just walk in and out and talk with them. Nothing hindered their relationship until sin happened. You see, they heard the sound of God walking in the garden. If God always did such a thing, why would they hide now?
That is why I do not think God was asking about Adam's location, but His position in God. We have the image of God to be properly positioned in Him. What God lost after Adam sinned was a healthy relationship. Think about it. If God was always visiting Adam and Eve in such a manner, why freak out when your Father comes to see you? Unless there's something you did, right?
For you to understand why you are single, you have to understand who you are. When you know who you are, you know what you need. Your choices will depend on your identity and in the things you identify yourself with. Do you find your identity in God? Where are you in your relationship with God? Is it more important that you have a relationship with another person than to have a relationship with God? Carefully consider these questions.
for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.' - Acts 17:28 (NKJV)
The bible says, we find our being, in God. A person cannot complete you. God is the only one that can complete you. If you are looking to a person to find completion or fulfillment, you are looking to the wrong person. A man will never complete you.
You are complete in Christ
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead []bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all []principality and power. - Colossians 2:9-10 (NKJV)
Christ completes you. That is why the most important relationship that you will ever have is the one you have with God. That is the only permanent relationship you will ever have. Human relationships are temporary. It's nice to think that our best friends will live forever, but that isn't true. The only relationship that is eternal is the one you have with God.
How much do you know about you?
I will praise You, for []I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well. - Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)The second most important relationship is the relationship you have with yourself. I know what you are thinking. Maybe it's a little selfish. But I do not think so. The amount of love you give is a reflection of how much you love yourself. When you are single, you have the greatest opportunity to learn about yourself. You get the chance to learn about your weaknesses, your strengths and all the things you need to learn about yourself. You cannot know about who you are through the lens of your partner.
David said, 'I am fearfully and wonderfully made.' Do you know that God made you the way you are for a reason? It doesn't matter if you are black or white or Indian, what matters is that God made you and He made you in His own Image. He created you to be like Him. Everything you are reveals God's handiwork. He designed you as you are. With them freckles and all, that's God being creative. The little dark spots on your face manifest God's creativity. Each time God looks at you, He says, "That's mine."
