*SLAM* "MOM? YOU HOME" I yell as I walk in the door. Nothing but silence. 'Oh yeah. Business trip,' I think to myself. I go to the table because by now I'm starving. I walked 38 blocks there and back all the way to the cinema. And for what?!

My anger flushes back to me. I feel my cheeks heat up and suddenly, I have this swelling urge to just SCREAM. So, I do. I scream and cry and let all my emotions just flood out. "Why me? Why not Leah?! Why can't she be the one with no money? No parents? No friends? No LIFE?" Then I slide down to the white, tiled floor and squeeze my eyes shut tight.

I suddenly feel a cold breeze. It lifts my hair and swings it gently. I open my eyes and I see that my small, kitchen window is open. 'Has it been like that this whole time?' I ask myself. I just shrug it off. 'Probably.'

I crawl (literally) to the living room and sit myself on the hard couch. My head starts feeling lighter, my eyelids, heavier, and next thing I know, I'm fast asleep.

.................................................

"Psst."......"Psst." I hear someone psst-ing me. My eyes start to creep open. "Please. Don't open your eyes." Whispers a scratchy, deep, and kind voice. "I don't want you to be frightened." I obey the voice's wishes because, to be completely honest, I'm already scared out of my wits. I'm just hoping he doesn't want to kill me.

"Who are you?" I ask, trying to sound confident.

"Are you sure you would like to know?" They ask, calmly.

"I don't know." I answer truthfully.

"You may call me 'Tall Man'." They answered.

"Alright Tall Man. Why are you here?" No answer. "Why are you here Tall Man?" Silence. "Tall Man?" I open my eyes. There's nobody there.

I look around the room, nothing seems to be any different before I fell asleep. 'At least we know he wasn't a thief,' I thought, and chuckle. But then I realize... my small kitchen window is now shut. I walk up to the window and find something odd. A note. Its torn and looks old. It smells of dust and pine trees. It reads;

Dear Brooklyn,

Do not be scared. I only watch to protect you. There are things that you don't know about. Things you just wouldn't understand, lurking out there in the dark. I'm here to watch you and protect you. So again, do not be alarmed. Think of me as, a guardian.

If you ever need anything, Brooklyn, you can always just ask. I'll be around.

Always Watching.

-Tall Man

I wonder what kind of "things" are really out there. Could he really protect me? How will he "be around"? Is he following me? Isn't that stalking? No. He said he was just protecting me. But from what? And again... I have to ask, WHY ME?
