Prologue

I was just 14 when it happened. My dad had returned from his petty job and I hurried outside to welcome him. He was completely drained.

Dad worked down the street as a furniture maker. At least that's what he had told me. I had never been to his workshop, he wouldn't let me.

Mum, suffering from a mild CAD, had to quit her job and this made my dad's little business our family's only means of survival.

That night, I, mum and dad had dinner together as a family, which really didn't happen often. Since I stopped schooling, my parents argued about almost everything which all came down to mum asking dad to get a new job.

The family dinner was awfully quiet. Nobody said anything knowing that just a word could start a day's quarrel. After eating, I rinsed our plates and carried them to the store which was just beside our house.

It was a small bungalow sitting at the center of our huge compound enclosed by a large black gate a few feet from the door. I had returned the plates, and then on my way back I noticed a car headlight in front of the gate, I ignored it knowing we weren't expecting anyone.

Later that night, we had a family prayer, which was also rare. It seemed like dad wanted to end the long dispute. After that, I stumbled into bed while my dad remained on the couch in the living room, going through the last pages of his favorite book "The Secret".

As I lay on my back and closed my eyes, all set to have the best dreams after a perfect night, I heard a loud bang. It sounded like someone had hit the gate furiously. Mum who was already outside taking down the clothes she had hung earlier rushed to the gate.

Before dad could get off the couch, there were rowdy arguments from the other side of the gate and then I heard another bang, this one was louder that the first and was followed by total silence.

I jumped off my bed to find out what happened. At the same time dad came into my room. His face showed mixed emotions as he asked me to follow him. He took me outside through the back door and he asked me to hide in the store.

I had never seen dad that frightened before, which gave me the idea that something was terribly wrong. Dad tried to calm me down but he also warned me not to leave the store no matter what I heard.
