Chapter 3 [#2]

Then I saw something move at the other end of the wide room, tightly packed with double-bed bunks. I froze and quickly switched off the flashlight. I stared directly at where I had heard it but nothing moved.

Maybe I was just too scared that I started seeing things. At that point, I was feeling a bit sleepy so I climbed down, dropped the file and was about to climb back up to my bed when I heard a sniffing sound. It sounded like someone was crying. I walked slowly to where I heard it. As I got closer, the sniffing sound increased.

I was a bit surprised to see someone sitting bent over on the bottom bed. He quickly cleaned his face as he saw me coming. I wondered why he was awake by that time and I was also very keen to know why he was crying.

Maybe the rusty metal bunk had injured him. The bunks were badly maintained just like almost every other thing we used. But if it were the case, then he would have tried washing away the wound or wrapping it with a cloth, so it definitely wasn’t the reason. Or he must have lost his books. When the exams are near, especially the final exams, lazy students end up stealing other’s books to make up for what they missed at school. Stealing was very common at those periods. That could be the reason why he sobbed.

As I got closer, the light from the torch I held helped me to see the boy’s face clearly. He looked very similar to the boy I saw at the gates the other morning. It was barely a day since he was admitted and I could see why he felt that way.

"I felt the same the same way on my first day" I said as I sat on the bed. "It must have been horrible"
