The bell was rung, which meant that it was time to get to the reading hall. Prep time was the most dreaded by the others. I actually disliked it a bit but realizing what was at stake, my final exams. I had to make the best of it.
I rinsed my plate and returned it to kitchen when I was called by Mr. Abayomi. He was a caregiver at the orphanage and held the record of the most feared. He had a tall and dark figure with broad shoulders and was quite creative in the aspect of discipline.
Getting called by Mr. Abayomi was a situation never to be wished for. My legs were trembling in fear as I approached him, but to my relief he had no intentions of dealing with me.
“You are Diara, right?” He asked, tucking in his striped white shirt into his thin trousers.
“Yes sir,”
“A man is at the main office, he’s waiting for you” He said, looking at his wrist watch and leaving towards the dormitory.
I walked through the grasses beside the refectory towards the main office and all that was on my mind was “Who could be waiting for me?” I couldn’t think of anyone. I hadn’t broken any rule and there was nobody outside the orphanage who would at any point come for me, then I remembered, Officer Harrison, the detective who handled my parent’s case. He promised he’d be checking up on me, but he could easily be taken off the list since he had stopped visiting after the case was abandoned.
