The dance studio had an off-white walls and hardwood flooring. It was spacious. There was a full-length mirror in front. I assumed they are the evaluators. I got more nervous seeing the people besides the evaluators. They were sitting on the floors. Nakapalibot sila sa studio. I saw Hana on the right side together with the other auditionees.
The staff told me to stand in the middle while they were preparing to play my audition song.
"Are you ready?" Tanong ng lalaking katabi ni Vince.
"Yes." I answered, trying to hide the nervousness in my voice.
I realized it was Kenzo because of his silver hair. He was leaning against the huge mirror while both his hands are inside his sweat pants.
Lumapit ang tingin ko kay Hana. She smiled and waved at me. "Fighting!" She mouthed.
While waiting for the song to play, I heard the people around me softly cheering. It somehow helped me lessened the tension that I was feeling.
"Good luck, Ate!"
"Fighting po!"
And then the music played. I started by walking slowly like how Kyla of Pristin did at the beginning of the dance. The choreography was simple yet elegant. It was one of the most beautiful kpop choregraphies I've ever seen.
The most important part of this dance was timing. Because there were parts that it was slow, and then would become faster, so I tried to focus on listening to its beat rather than the lyrics. I was scared miss some beats because of the adrenaline rush, but if I did, I tried to make it unnoticable.
When I finished, I slightly bow my head. I heard people clapping and cheering but after that it was a complete silence. Everyone was waiting for the reaction of the evaluators.
Vince and the person on his right side, they were both smiling. While the girl on Vince's left side, she crossed her arms and stared at me, expressionless. I could tell by her strong aura that she was someone who was hard to please. Her golden-copper hair made her look fiesty.
"I love you, Julina!" Hana screamed out of nowhere, breaking the silence in the room.
I pursed my lips, trying not laugh.
The golden-copper haired girl glanced briefly at Hana and lift her eyebrow then she looked at me. Hinawakan niya yung mic.
"You are good. Pero nakulangan ako." Komento niya. "I think you chose the wrong choreography. It didn't highlight your true skills instead it was holding you back."
Napalunok ako.
I hated to admit but I agree with her. I knew deep within me that the choreography wouldn't show my true skills. Dahil sa ilang taon na akong hindi sumasayaw, I wasn't confident dancing the style I used to dance before. I went for the safer dance because I was afraid to make mistakes.
"Did you perhaps prepare another dance?" Tanong niya.
I smiled and nodded my head. I was grateful Cassia told me about preparing another dance.
"Can you show us?"
I hesitated for a moment. I already expected this to happen.
This happened to me before when I auditioned for the dance club back in high school. They asked me to do freestyle and I refused them. I was shy and had inhibitions back then, which I still do, in the end I failed my first audition. I tried to audition the next year and finally got accepted to the dance club.
