"Don't you love the scenery Khan?" Olive, a red-headed thirteen year old girl, asked me.
Me, Olive and the rest of our class were getting off the bus for a school camping trip to Jasper National Park.
"It's decent." I replied, being as impartial as I could.
"Well I love it." Marcus, one of her friends added, butting in.
I rolled my eyes as I pushed him away. "Gah, Olive, why do you have such weird fr-" I started to ask.
"Shush! Don't be rude Khan, he's quite nice-once you get to know him at least." she scolded me, "Just try to get along, okay?"
I started to grumble, but she shushed me again so I complied. Olive led us out the bus and onto the campsite. "Wow..." me and Mark sighed simultaneously.
"Told ya!" she gloated, flipping her bright red hair behind her.
"We should try to get a better look." Marcus insisted, and he ran right into the forest.
"Marcus! Come back! MARK!" she called as she ran after Marcus.
"Olive! You shouldn't go in there either! My god...." I groaned, following suit.
After many twists and turns, we found ourselves in a beautiful, but extremely dangerous, place. The pines were reaching for the sky, but were miniscule compared to the snow-topped mountains. Even the clouds had a certain icy sheen. "Perfect." Mark whispered as he reached for his camera, "What?! I-I-I'm positive I had my camera on me!"
"Only fools are positive." I chuckled, smirking at him.
He scowled at me. "Boys, stop fooling around, unless you are positive you know the way out of here!" Olive stressed, "Boys..."
We froze, giving each other dirty looks, giving Olive apologetic looks, and giving the looming forest around us terrified looks. "GRRR..."
"Don't make fun of me!" Olive shrieked.
Me and Mark looked at each other and shook our heads. "Um, Olive," I started, "that wasn't us..."
"Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god. I'm going to die surrounded by idiots." she whispered.
"You're not going to d-" I started.
"RUN! A BEAR IS CHASING US! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!" Mark interrupted, screaming his head off.
Are you serious? I hate Marcus and his stupid timing. My god. What a dummy. But we all ran, ran as fast as we could, how he didn't catch us, I have no idea. We found some shelter in a cave, where Olive found fresh herbs and edible fungi. "We're not going to be able to leave," Olive noted, "not with that bear there at least. We could a take run of faith but...."
"I'm sorry for getting you all into this, it's all my fault." Mark apologized, "If only I hadn't gone in the woods, in search of a photospot."
He hugged Olive and reluctantly gave me a hug too. "I'll do it." Marcus announced through his tears, "I'll take the run of faith. And even if I do get eaten, maybe he'll lose his appetite for you."
Before me or Olive could protest, he ran out of the cave, swift as the wind. "NO! Marcus come back!" Olive cried as she ran after him.
"Ugh, again? OLIVE!" I yelled as I ran after her.
As soon as she got outside, the bear's attention was pulled to her. No matter what I did, it was like her flaming red hair was a conquistador's cape, and the bear was a bull. So we ran. We ran past trees and boulders, grass and, tents! We had outran the bear and we were back. "Guys, what happened to you?" someone asked.
Me, Olive and Marcus looked at each other exasperatedly. "It's a long story." I supplied. THE END
