Finally, the school year was over. For the past few weeks, Colum had been trying his best to harass me. I wasn't having any of that so I didn't hesitate to stab him with my pencil or slap his hand away. I couldn't tell anyone because I didn't have proof. Today is the day Mandy visits me. I am freaking excited. Eeeeeeeee! I've cleaned my room a thousand and one times. Since she'll be sleeping with me, my room needs to be spotless.
My mom and Chinelo have gone to the airport to pick her up. I wanted to wait at home with Maur and Lee. I hear the doorbell, which indicates that either Lee or Maur has arrived. I opened the door to reveal Lee holding flowers.
"Flowers?" I raised a perfectly drawn brow at him with a smirk on my face.
"Yeah! They're for Mands—I mean Mandy." He rubbed his hand on his thigh nervously.
"Mands?!" The smug look on my face is priceless.
"Shut up and let me in." He pushed past me into the parlor. I was about to close the door when I saw Maureen coming up my porch.
"Guess what!"
"What?!"
"Mumu! I told you to guess. Whatever! I can bet my last money that Lee likes Mandy!" I squealed to Maureen. Her eyes widened in size.
"Whaaaaaaaa!!!!"
"Yup!!!! This is so exciting! Let's go in." I literally dragged her inside the house. We entered the parlor to see a dazed Lee.
"Ey Lee!" I called. No answer.
"Lee oo!" Maureen called. Still no answer. I stood in front of him and snapped my fingers for a good while before he snapped out of it.
"A penny for your thoughts?" I smugly said. Instead of a witty comeback, he stuck his hand into his pocket and brought out ten dollars.
"Sorry but I'm outta change. I've got a ten though!"
"I-" Maureen and I facepalmed together while Lee snorted in laughter. Did he just say that? Yes, yes he did.
Almost an hour later—without my mom and Chinelo returning with Mandy—I was getting hungry. I stood up and went to the kitchen to eat Gala. I don't know whether my mom gets someone to ship some out to us, but I never cared enough to ask. As long as it goes into my belly, I don't care where it comes from. Before I could sit down though, someone snatched my Gala outta ma hand.
"What the-" I looked up to see Maureen tossing my snack to Lee, who was at the other end of the room.
"Ohhhh! You people I'm not playing oo. Gimme my food." I reverted to my Nigerian accent.
"Come get it." I stomped over to Lee, only to have him throw it back to Maureen.
"Please nowwwwww! I'm hungry! Don't be doing this thing. Ah ah!" They kept on playing Toss The Gala while I was starving. When I finally gave up, I went back to the kitchen. I heard their teasing and laughter behind me but I didn't care. A hungry me is a 'laugh-all-you-want-i-don't-give-two-butts' me! This time, I decided to start munching on my Gala in the kitchen while leaning on the fridge to grab a drink. While doing that, I felt my Gala leave my hand. AGAIN!
HELL NAA!
"IsweartoGod—" I said-as best I could with my mouth full-when I stopped to see me Gala grabber. I turned to see Mandy in her 5'8 glory munching on my grabbed Gala with a smug look on her face.
"AMANDA!!!" I yelled and lunged myself at her.
"You're here! You came! I've missed you so so soooooo much!" I was a mouth-full sobbing mess.
"I've missed you too." We hug again till we finally let go of each other to see Lee, Maureen, Chinelo and my mom watching us with smiles on their faces.
"These are Lee and Maureen, my best friends." I introduced. Mandy raised a perfectly drawn brow.
"And who am I supposed to be?" She playfully glared at me.
"You are my sister from another mother, my partner in crime, my sugar plum, my akara, my jollof rice, my—"
"Point taken!" She and everyone else laughed out loud.
"What is akara?" Lee asked, ruining the pronunciation as usual.
"It's a good. The English name is bean cake. It's yummy." Mandy said, answering Lee. I can swear that I saw a tinge of pink on his cheek. I looked him in the eye and wriggled my eyebrows at him. He blushed harder which made me laugh.
"Welcome to your home for two weeks." My mom told Lee to carry Mandy's stuff to my room. I'm glad that my mom likes Lee. Back in Nigeria, when your parents don't someone, you can't hangout with them. Even if you try doing it secretly, the old woman down the street will snitch on you. Every adult is your parent. They can scold or beat you anytime for any wrongdoing. Even if you think that you won't be found out, someone has already snitched on you. Life in Africa. Sigh.
The next two weeks is gonna be freaking amazing!!!
