FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, HERE I COME

The whole week was hectic. Moving and bringing things. Packing and unpacking. Shouting instructions and yelling at Chinelo and I. Threatening to slap and cane us when we complain about something. When one of us breaks something, my mom goes haywire. When she breaks something, she is like 'Oh'. How fair is that?
Today is Sunday. School starts tomorrow. I am excited as well as scared. Will I be treated like garbage? Well, I have to wait for tomorrow then.
"Clementina Ijeoma Okafor! Come here now!" My mom yelled for me in Igbo. When you are called by your full name in my house then know that you toast.
Oh oh! What did I do now?
I meekly head downstairs with my heart racing. I see a furious looking mom in the kitchen. Staring at something on the counter.
"Yes mommy?"
"Who left this food here?"
"I did." I don't eat a lot.
"What have I told you about wasting food? You are very well aware that there are children in this world that do not have food to eat. Just see how you wasted food." My mom always tells us of how she grew up. She said that she struggled to get food to eat so seeing wasted food makes her remember how she suffered.
"I wasn't hungry anymore." I explained.
"You children never listen. This is why I have been telling you to take small food. If you want more then you can go for a second helping. Is this not what I've been saying all sixteen years of your life?" Well a very long story short, I got a very, very, very long lecture on how wasting food is wrong.
After that incident—with me promising to never waste food again—I went up to my room to call Amanda. God, I'm missing her so much already.
"Hey Mandy."
"IJ! What's new? How are you liking it so far?"
"Same old, same old. Mommy will never stop screaming at somebody. Just now I got the 'Don't waste food' lecture."
"Chai! Auntie Patricia will never change. Fred says hi." She laughed. Fred is Amanda's cute older cousin. I had a crush on him when he started living with Mandy's family newly, but when he started becoming more of a brother to me and I saw all the gross things he did, I lost all feelings for him. He is a cool guy though.
"Of course he does. Tell him I will call him maybe tomorrow. What time is it there sef ?"
"IJ see eh, I forgot to bring the goat meat out of the fridge. My mom will use me as goat meat today. Call me back or text me in fifteen. Okay? Okay bye." She hung up. This girl always forgets to thaw the meat. One day she will be used for meat. Hehe. Ten minutes later, she texted me.

Mumu🤦🏼‍♀️😂: Girl, God has saved me today🥵
Mumu🤦🏼‍♀️😂: Gossip auntie came to talk to my mom so she forgot about the meat😅If not eh😓
Me: 😂😂you never learn.
Mumu🤦🏼‍♀️😂: 😌So what about school tomorrow. Are you ready?

Me: Of course😂That's why I love ya😘
Mumu🤦🏼‍♀️😂: Love ya too bish😘Oya go and sleep😴

I wish Amanda were here with me.

As in sit in the car the next morning, I'm sure my stomach is tied in knots. I feel so nervous. My mom isn't making it any easier for me by giving Chinelo and I the 'no fighting' speech.
"You know it's your first day. Things don't run the same way it does in Nigeria. Here is a different place. As I always say, never forget your route. Don't do what everyone is doing. Just because they are doing it doesn't make it right. Do you hear me? Be at the right place at the right time.If you are at the wrong place at the wrong time then there will always be trouble. Not everyone will like you, always remember that. Just be yourself and you will get people to like you. Do you girls understand what I'm saying? Don't go and be doing that thing where they will ask you question and you will nod your head. You are not a lizard so answer with the mouth God gave you." My mom advised.
"Do you understand what I'm saying? Both of you?"
"Yes I do." I answered
"I do too." Chinelo answered as well.
"We are almost there." My mom informed. Some few minutes later, we arrived in front of a large school building with a lot of teenagers of every race and nationality walking and chatting. I took a deep breath.
