Underneath the Stars

Chapter 18

I looked at him in complete shock, "No, Max, I shouldn't have left you there dead because you and I both know that's not what you want," I said looking at him. I walked away from his bed; I couldn't believe him.

Walking over to the other chair in the room, I sat down as I heard him mumble an "okay." He didn't argue with me or say anything back to what I had said, he wasn't himself. I looked over at him, we caught glances with each other, but he broke the stare looking out the window. I sighed to myself, "I'm going to go down to the cafeteria, do either of you want anything to eat?" I asked them. "Can I have a bottle of water?" Jack asked me, I nodded as I walked out of the room going to the cafeteria. The truth was I wasn't going to get anything to eat, I just needed an excuse to leave. I couldn't stand looking at Max like that, the silence from him was breaking me. I took a seat a table that was meant for two by the window. I had bought two bottles of water, one for me, and one for Jack. Opening my bottle of water I took a small sip as the iciness hit the back of my throat. Slowly, I sipped my water as I looked out the window, desperately wanting the Max I knew back.

*in the hospital room*

Jack looked over at Max, who was still staring out the window. Jack walked over to his side, sitting down in the chair that had been mine all of the night before. "What are you thinking about?" Jack asked looking at him, breaking him from his thoughts.

Max shook his head turning to look at Jack, "Nothing important," Max said shrugging, looking away from him.

Jack looked at him, "C'mon, tell me, mate."

Max shook his head again, "it's nothing important," he began, "nothing I do is, ever," he mumbled, clearly forgetting about the fact he was in the hospital because his life was saved by two people who cared about him.

Jack looked at him, "Seriously? Max you know that isn't true, you're in this hospital because, in case you forgot, your girlfriend found you dying on the bathroom floor and cared enough to get you here, so don't pull that with me because I'm not going to be nice about it," Jack said sternly.

Max nodded, "have you been back to the house since the other day?" Max asked, changing the subject.

Jack shook his head, "No, but you should be discharged later today or early tomorrow morning."

Max nodded again as he sat up, "I don't think you should be going anywhere," Jack said, Max swung his legs over the bed, "Mate, I have to piss," Max said standing up.

As he stood up he almost fell over, not realizing how weak his body was. Jack wrapped his arms around him, helping him to the bathroom. Max did his business and got back in bed, just as Dr. Moore walked in.

"We are going to be transporting you over to the suicidal ward now," he said as he snapped the arms of the bed up and unlocked the wheels to move him. Jack gathered his coat and phone walking with Dr. Moore and Max as they headed to an elevator. As they all, miraculously, got into the elevator, they went up two floors to the fourth floor and turned down a hallway. Cameras lined the ceiling and the nurse's station was closely monitored.

His bed was rolled into an empty room, "This is your new room," Dr. Moore began, "You can only have one visitor at a time, you can't go anywhere without a doctor, we will have a nurse come in and make sure the room is clear of anything you could harm yourself with, and that's pretty much it, Mr. George, I will check on you every thirty minutes. Also, I will give you an update of when you can leave," Dr. Moore explained as he left the room.

Jack set down his things by the window on the large windowsill. "Not a bad room," Jack said looking around.

"Yeah, but I still don't want to be in this shitty place," Max mumbled
