HUGO SMILED AT HIS BARELY OLDER SISTER, WATCHING AS SHE PLAYED WITH A SMALL TOY THEY HAD BEEN GIVEN. Hugo was messing with the bracelet that he had been given by her because Jane had recently become fond of all the colors of the rainbow. So she made Hugo a bracelet.

At the time, Hugo didn't know what it meant, and he was glad for it. "Hugo, can you come play with me?" The five-year-old asked. Hugo smiled and walked over, plopping down onto the floor.

Jane handed him a stuffed dog, smiling at the bracelet that was wrapped around his wrist.

"Jane... why do they have to keep us away from all the others?" Hugo asked her, his big brown eyes looking down at her. "I don't know, Hugo. Maybe one day we'll get to spend time with them. I would love to meet them." El giggled, pushing her hair messily behind her ear.

Hugo nodded, crossing his arms as he started to play with his sister.

Suddenly, the door slammed open, two men came inside. Jane and Hugo glanced at them, their eyebrows raised. The men walked behind Hugo, grabbing him by his upper arms.

Hugo took in a sharp breath, kicking one of the men in his leg. "Wait! Let me go!" Jane watched, terrified. "Let him go!" Jane shouted, trying to run after him. One guard pushed his hand out, keeping her from getting out of the room. "Not now."

Hugo thrashed in their arms, kicking and punching to no prevail. He just gave up eventually, allowing them to drag him into an open area, the only source of light coming from the window that allowed people to look at him.

The little boy had his knees to his chest as he locked eyes with the very man who kept him held in this place. He felt a shiver run down his spine as Brenner stared down at the boy menacingly.

"You know what you're supposed to do, number nine." Hugo tilted his head at the man, the door opening, and a man set a malnourished cat in front of him, exiting right after.

The cat stared up at him, it couldn't have been even a year old yet. Hugo looked up towards Brenner, a glossy look over his eyes. "Kill it," Brenner demanded.

Hugo gulped and looked down at the cat. It shrank in fear and Hugo just couldn't. He knew he wouldn't be able to do it. Red enclosed his hands and he waited until he felt something land in his lap. He looked down at the small bag of food that was set in his lap, thanking the ghost beside him quietly.

The ghost nodded in welcome and left, allowing Hugo to feed the cat. It purred as it are the food from Hugo's hand, but the door was slammed open.

"That's not what I told you to do." The cat bolted out of the room while it could and Hugo quickly scrambled over to the corner of the room, trying to get away from the man that was stalking up towards him.

"I told you to kill it. Not feed it." He was struck across the face, causing him to whimper. "Now, let's try again, shall we?"

Hugo backed up a bit more as the cat was thrown back into the room, darting up towards the boy. Hugo whimpered and looked up towards the men who watched him. "No!" He shouted.

Brenner huffed and signaled the two men to go get him. He was, once again, picked rip by his forearms and dragged down the hall. "Let go of me!" He shouted.

The men ignored him and continued to carry him, his feet dragging on the floor as he stopped moving. Black washed over his eyes as a red aura enclosed his hands.

"I said let go!" He shouted, and the men were thrown on different sides of the hall.

Hugo's eyes widened as he watched as Jane was thrown into their shared room. He noticed the bruises that littered her body immediately. He scrambled over to her, pulling her into a protective hug. He ran a hand over her shaved head and kissed the top of her head softly.

"It's okay. I promise. Here, let me help." Jane whimpered as Hugo grabbed her hand, a streak of red flowing from his hands and dancing across her pale skin. Jane watched in amazement as her wounds seemed to heal and her energy was restored.

"How did you do that?" She asked in a small voice. Hugo shook his head with a soft smile. "A story for another time."

Hugo looked up at Brenner with dark eyes. "This is the last time, Number Nine. If you fail this test, you will be sent to the room." Hugo growled at him as he stared at the cat that was in front of him.

He shook his head, black glazing over his eyes. He stood up, his feet barely lifting off the ground as he glared at the five men that lingered in the room. Suddenly, a man, and a woman, surrounded in red appeared, prancing around the room.

Hugo spread his hands apart, seeing as that's how his abilities became stronger. His brown hair flowed around his head like a crown as his pitch-black eyes glared at Brenner from the other room.

The man visibly shivered at the glare and a man was sent into the room, knocking Hugo out with a sedative. His eyes became droopy, his figure going back to normal as he fell to the floor. She was slung over the shoulder of the man who was still alive and brought into a room.

And from that day forward, Hugo went by Adrian. A 'normal' boy with a 'normal' family.

if you guys didn't understand this, this basically shows adrians (hugo's) progress with his abilities, it's confusing i'm sorry
