Varian's POV
Varian was thoroughly confused about why this Carissa girl would go through so much planning in a day to help him escape.
He was also confused about how she had planned this so intricately.
He was also confused about why she would help him at all. He had hurt a lot of people in his quest to free his father from the amber. He kidnapped the queen, threatened the princess and several other lives, and, just now, lied to Carissa about the rocks not hurting him.
They had actually punctured his shoulder. And it hurt. A lot.
(And yes, he did mind a high certainty of death. He minded a high certainty of death very much.)
Varian didn't know what to make of her. She had messy chocolate-brown hair a little past her shoulders, pale skin, a slender frame, and green eyes. She was wearing a black jacket, a white shirt, and navy-blue pants under her dark emerald-green cloak. She looked a bit like an older version of Cassandra, except for the fact that she looked around Varian's age. No, he was not thinking of Cassandra often at all.
Carissa looked at Varian. "We're getting closer to Old Corona. Once we get there, you're gonna have to lie low, since you're meant to be arrested. You're gonna need to be able to defend and disguise yourself. I'll go get your supplies and alchemy from your house."
"Don't we have two cloaks?" Varian asked.
"I kinda think that would draw attention," Carissa pointed out. "Random guy in a cloak, just walking towards the house of the criminal who attacked the princess? That's going to raise a lot of red flags. I think I should go alone. No one here knows that I helped you break out, it's the best option."
"You don't know which solution is which," Varian snapped. "I should be the one to go, alone. I don't trust this random stranger, even if they did break me out."
They had a slight staring contest.
Carissa sighed, still looking annoyed. "Either I am going alone, or we go together with you disguised."
Varian kept glaring.
"No." Carissa glared back. "I'm going alone, okay? I don't want you to be down there!"
They both went quiet. Varian knew what she was talking about. He didn't want to be in the basement with the amber either. He didn't think he could look at his father until he had a way to free him - which was far from now.
"Just, write down the chemicals you need." Carissa rolled her eyes. "Describe what they look like and where they are. I will get them from your dork laboratory."
Varian glared. "It's not a dork laboratory."
"Before all this, you spent all day in there experimenting with your weird mixtures. Yeah, I'd say it's a dork laboratory. Now stop being annoying and tell me what mixtures I need and where to find them."
Varian did not know what to do. There was no way Carissa could find everything he needed - he had to go with her. Plus, there was no way she could handle them properly.
"I've got to either go with you or alone."
"Let's list what you currently are." Carissa counted on her fingers. "Brilliant, yes. A complete and utter dork, correct. Emotionally scarred, check again. Currently wanted by Corona law for kidnapping the queen, threatening the princess, and attempting to kill the royal family and several others? Absolutely. Most likely arrested on sight? Indeed." Carissa put her hands on her hips and smirked. "So, do I go alone or not?"
