Work was first on the agenda the following morning, just as it was every weekday. Neither Kirishima nor Bakugo were big talkers in the morning and enjoyed spending the first half hour after waking in silence. Usually, the only sound in the house consisted of showers running, bowls clinking, and footsteps on wood trailing down corridors. Today, however, Kirishima was woken by sound of his own throat wheezing for air.
He abruptly sat up in his bed with his hand on his chest. He took slow, deep breaths, but each breath felt heavier than the last. He looked at the clock on his bedside table that displayed 6:25 am - five minutes earlier than usual. He rubbed his neck with his hands in hopes of easing the pain, but the friction only caused for a scratchier throat. He felt the familiar need to cough arise in him, and allowed it to occur. He coughed twice into his hand, gasping for air after each one. His heart stopped when they met the visual in his hands; a small pool of blood rest in his palms, accompanied by three petals.
He stood up to wash his hands in the sink, assuming his episode was over. He threw the petals into the little bin they kept in the corner of their bathroom and was barely able to take his hands to the sink before the urge to cough arose once more. Again, his breathing felt thick and heavy, and the threat of suffocation was followed by another series of coughs. It was more than twice - although he had lost count as to how many times he coughed exactly. But it was enough to invoke a fear of dying. He watched his hands fill with more blood and petals with each outburst, and he quickly began feeling helpless. Once the petals in his hand became enough to construct a small decoration, he finally felt like he was able to breathe.
He wrapped the rest of the petals in toilet paper before throwing them in the bin, being mindful of Bakugo accidentally discovering his illness. He wasn't sure why he was ashamed. Perhaps, it was because of the nature of the supposed illness - he didn't want Bakugo to know he was sick from a love he was unaware of. Surely, he could tell Bakugo though?
Something in him still refused to expose himself, and as he watched the final drops of blood wash down the sink drain, he decided he would keep this to himself until he figured out what to do.
A voice boomed down from the kitchen, "YO SHITTY-HAIR, STOP SPENDING SO MUCH DAMN TIME WITH THE HAIR GEL AND COME EAT ALREADY! WE'RE GONNA BE LATE, DUMB-ASS!" And with that, they wrapped up their morning and headed to work.
They work as Hero's was tamer than you'd think. After the new generation of Hero's had begun work, they were quickly able to establish their place in the world of crime, and broken laws and evil schemes became few and far between. Kirishima often found himself filing papers for petty theft or assisting in the training of new recruits, and only on occasion going out to track criminals. Luckily for this story, today was one of those occasional days.
Side by side with Bakugo, Kirishima was facing two Villains who had been causing small scale explosions all over the city. They had cornered them in an alleyway - as all fighting scenes require - and were waiting for the Villains to make their first move. The Villain on the left set the pace as he charged towards Kirishima, who instantly activated his hardening quirk. Kirishima let the man on the right for Bakugo while he quickly analysed his opponents strong, wide physique and determined that he would be a challenge to fight directly.
Instead, Kirishima used his forearms to block the fist pummelling towards him and focused his attention to the Villains legs, hoping to gain an advantage by taking his balance from him. He set his plan into motion and with a swift kick, had managed to push the bigger man backwards and onto the ground. He softened his hardening quirk ever so slightly on the fist he used to deliver a final blow. He was strong enough. He stood up from his battle, only to be startled by the face of an enraged Bakugo, who recoiled his first in preparation of his own final blow. The only problem was that it was being directed at Kirishima!
The Red Riot ducked on instinct and listened to the explosion take place above him. A quick glance upwards revealed that the second Villain had been standing behind him, and Bakugo trusted Kirishima to avoid attack so he could deliver his weapon of a fist to the criminal.
Kirishima exhaled a laugh, unsure if it was from nervousness, relief, or admiration. Despite the devastating explosion, the Villain behind him wasn't ready to give up, and the crackle of shoes on concrete behind him told him that the criminal was attempting to make a run for it. Bakugo leaped over Kirishima and chased after, turning the corner with perfect precision, using his explosions to boost him forward.
The relief in Kirishima was shattered by the worst barrage of coughs he had ever had. It wouldn't stop. He couldn't breathe. He could feel his throat going raw and bloody as his body heaved something from deep inside his lungs, but he wasn't sure how long he would be able to stay coughing without air. His throat and chest tight, his mind numb with alarm. His eyes strained and his hands grasped at the floor. No one was around, no one could hear him.
With a final, desperate grasp at life, he used whatever strength he had to activate his hardening quirk in his arm. He brought his fist up to his chest as fast as he could and braced for impact. Below him, landed the head of a flower, stained red with blood. He gasped for air, desperate to live. A few deep breaths allowed him to settle, and he looked at the flower below him. It was getting worse, and he didn't know what to do.
