Jenn was staring at the body in the mortuary. The room was cold and dead silent. There was also almost no smell, most likely due to the magic vent. The three of them were staring at the body. Jenn was getting annoyed. "Gen, how close are you too being done?" "I'm almost done," the small investigator said. The sheriff piped up, "so, how much can you learn from just the dead body?" Jenn answered quickly, "depends, if they used magic, you can learn almost anything, but if they didn't then almost nothing in some cases." The sheriff shifted a bit, "So, you are the big boss lady right? So, what have you done to get to your position?" Jenn sighed, "Don't you have better questions to ask?"

"I'm just curious, no need to get upset."

"I solved more cases than the highest number you can count to."

"HEY! You don't need to get all upset. I'm the one who invited you here."

"You're lucky I don't report you for trying to interfere with the investigation!"

"In what way did I interfere with the investigation, I just think you need to go talk to people."

"Done!" said Gen.

"Finally, what did you find," asked Jenn.

"Well, it wasn't through magic, I can tell you that."

"Are you serious! We waited for all this time to get that," said the sheriff.

Jenn said, "We're going to eat lunch and then go talk to his wife, you get the mortician, sheriff. Send the report to me afterwards."

"FInally, some real investigations," said the sheriff.

They all walked outside. The sheriff went up the stairs to go find the mortician, while Jenn and Gen sat down on some chairs. The chairs were stiff and uncomfortable. Gen started to dig around in his bag to grab their lunch. It was two sandwiches, a cucumber sandwich and a blt. "How long do we have," asked Jenn, grabbing the blt. "About 10 minutes, the mortician went out for lunch, what do you want to know," asked Gen, biting into the cucumber sandwich.

"First, what actually killed him?"

"Poison.

Jenn sighed, "of course it was, what kind of poison?"

"Well, I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure that it is hard to get it."

"God! could be anyone who goes out of town a lot."

"Well, I told you, that's my hypothesis. It could just be very rare."

Jenn closed her eyes to think.

"So, that guy is a bit annoying right," asked Gen.

"The sheriff. Yea. Of course he would be. He thinks he is all powerful."

"Yea I could tell he got under your skin."

"You know why I became an investigator right?"

No," said Gen, his curiosity peaking, "why?"

Jenn sighed, "I had a friend, Bry his name was. He was a drow. He was an observer and was keen to learn as much as he could. He inspired me to be an investigator. I was two years older than he was, so I became an investigator first. Then, he disappeared. I thought something was up, but I was only a junior investigator. I went to my boss to ask to investigate him, and the investigation found nothing. I read the report, and it was lousy. I decided then to climb to the top and change how our department ran things."

"And how did you change things," asked Gen.

"Well, we now do magical investigations, for one. It's a lot harder to lie when magic is involved. We can look at magic residue at crime scenes and see who casted what and when. It helps, occasionally. I also, now, have started to report those that don't meet my criteria for investigations."

Gen said, "And I guess that doesn't do much?"

Jenn sighed, "Nope, but they can't fire me, because I'm the best investigator."

Gen looked up, "So why do you still work here?"

Jenn looked at Gen, "I don't know. I guess I think I can help."

Gen thought for a bit, and then said, "Why me, it seems you don't trust many people?"

Jenn smiled, "Your eyes. They are nice. Plus, I believe the personality stuff about the magic classes and whatnot. You care most about knowledge before anything else and you prefer to observe before acting."

Gen smiled as he finished his sandwich, "You're a lot smarter than you look.. Let's get a move on."
