The second I step outside I'm met with a harsh wind, and am swallowed by the darkness. I just stand there on the deck for a moment as the Cheez-its fall from my hand, spilling all over the porch. Thoughts begin racing through my head.

Why am I doing this? Why am I so afraid? Why am I supposed to be afraid...?

The clouds clear in the next moment, and the moon now illuminates through the darkness. I can see all around me, and it appears whatever I was supposed to be afraid of, isn't real. In that moment, I realize how much of a joke it had been all these years. I have already been out here for a full five minutes, at least, and nothing has happened. So, I begin to venture further, and I'm soon off my porch, and away from its safety. For those next few moments, everything is fine, but then it all changed.

Suddenly I hear footsteps behind me and I think, I've been caught outside. I turn around, expecting to see my dad, yelling at me, or my mom, telling me how much trouble I am in, but nothing can prepare me for what I'm really seeing.

Nothing.

Was it just a hallucination? Am I hearing things? I think to myself, Maybe there is something lurking on our property... I then decide it is time to go back inside, but before I can even take the first step, the footsteps start up again, louder and more prominent. Terror takes control of me as I stare at nothing, yet know something is there.  It's the weirdest thing. When half of your senses are telling you one thing, and the other half tells you something else.  I can tell they are getting closer and closer. I scream, "HELP!" hoping someone will hear me, but in that exact moment, the wind picks up, and drowns out my voice. Piddle is the last thing on my mind.

I keep calling out for someone to come help me, but the wind is now so strong that it almost knocks me down. It roars all around me, fall leaves whirl in the air, and I just stand there with only the hope that someone will hear me. I am trapped, cornered, with no way of escape but from behind me. I have to act fast. I don't have much time left. I have to make a decision. So in that moment, I turn around, and run for my life, into the woods, away from my safe haven. I wish I could say I don't, but I know I can faintly hear the footsteps following me every step of the way...
