Chapter 23
Maylene had thought about it. And she thought about it a lot. For her, it made no sense why Zoey protected her. The daughter of the infamous Red Nightmare, the daughter of a woman feared by the GAS, was the same daughter that saved her life.
Zoey even encouraged her to leave the school. That meant that whatever was going on was terrible enough to warrant Zoey's concern over her.
Why would a devil, like Zoey, be concerned about someone like her?
Back when Maylene started her GAS contract, she had to undergo six months of GAS symposium about devils and the GAS policies, mission, and vision. If there was something she had learned in those months, it was that all devils are heartless, vile, selfish, and murderous creatures they all must exterminate.
So why?
The question kept on bouncing within the walls of her mind. She was already aware that something was brewing in the academy, but now it was even murkier to her. The more time she spent within the school, the more questions only it produced.
It was already past one in the morning. She was supposed to be asleep four hours ago. But she was so perturbed by recent events that she couldn't even sleep a wink. She just kept on turning on her bed.
Who told you that you could touch my club members?
Here take this and cover yourself up.
Yes. I healed you.
I want you to leave this school. It isn't safe.
Maylene flipped on her underside and covered her head with a pillow.
Most of all, what she didn't understand was the storm of emotions she felt in her chest. Throughout her life, it was the first time she felt this upwelling surge of emotions. She could feel her heart beating more pronounced than before. Before closing her eyes into a forceful sleep, all the while pushing all these unknown raw emotions down to the deepest pits of her stomach, she decided she has to confront Zoey after all despite her warning.
If she ever wanted to repay her for saving her life, she has to know more.
The morning that followed Maylene prepped herself for school as fast as she could. She wanted to meet Zoey by the gymnasium as early as possible and have a talk with her alone before the arrival of the other members.
"Aren't you a bit too early for school Lady Maylene?" Roark asked as he fastened his seatbelt. "Something happened?" He quickly followed, eyeing Maylene by the rearview mirror.
Maylene silently buckled herself up on the backseat.
Acting as if she has not noticed it, Roark kept a stern gaze at her through the mirror. And she deeply knew that if she wouldn't give him an answer, or anything that would satisfy his curiosity at least, much of her time will only be wasted.
It is not that she found this side of Roark annoying, she understood him feeling this way. She has already shared some of her concerns with Roark regarding the school and the mission. As her caretaker and guardian, dealing with Roark's worry has always been a part of Maylene's day to day life.
She could only let out a trifling sigh.
"I was attacked.." She admitted. She felt Roark's grip tighten around the steering wheel. "But a friend saved me." She wasn't sure if 'friend' was the correct word to use, they were of different species after all, however among all the other students in the school it was Zoey who Maylene had the most connection with especially as the club captain.
