THIRD POV

BANG

Time seemed to freeze for Gavin. Eyes squeezed shut and ears ringing from the deafening sound of the shotgun going off. But he did not feel any pain. He expected to though. The suspect RK900 and he had been chasing had found himself cornered in an alley. The guy decided to pull the sawed off he had hid in his zipped up coat. Gavin was sure he was going to die.

Thud

Gavin slowly opens his eyes afraid of the sight waiting for him. The Perp pushes past Gavin getting away. But that doesn't matter anymore. Kneeling in front of him, blue blood pooling beneath him, is RK900. Gavin's breath catches as he steps around mind blank to the consequences. "Ti-Tincan," Gavin breathes voice cracking.

RK900 tilts his head back to look up at his partner. Thirium drips from the corner of his mouth. "Reed," his voice crackles like a bad radio connection. Gavin's legs give out shocked at the mangled chest plate from the shotgun blast. In his fogged brain Gavin finally makes the connection. RK900 protected him.

RK900 raises his arm to Gavin's face placing his hand against his cheek. Using his thumb he wipes away a tear that was slipping unknown down the Detective's face. "You better not phcking die Nines. Dammit! You hear me," Gavin snaps panic lacing his words. His hand shakes as he lifts it to cover Nines' hand still resting against his cheek. Tears blur his vision as he watches the Android's LED dimming steadily as it flashes red.

Nines' voice is staticky as he explains with a faint smile, "I'm a machine, Gavin, I can't die. I'll be back."

"But it won't be you," Gavin sobs. Nines smiles letting his hand drop his LED ceasing to flash. "Nines. Nines! PHCK," Gavin shouts shaking the Android only for him to move like a ragdoll. Backup arrives then sirens screaming. Or is that Gavin?

TWO WEEKS LATER

Gavin sits at his desk mindlessly filling out paperwork. Connor and Hank have noticed that he's rarely spoken since Nines shutdown. The bags under his eyes are getting worse by the day as well. Gavin glances away from his computer down to the picture frame sitting atop his desk. The one where Tina was able to capture one of Nines' rare smiles. In it Gavin is laughing his ass off at some stupid joke. She was able to sneak it at the last office Christmas party. Renewed pain blossoms in Gavin's chest making his breath hitch. He returns to his work forcefully blinking away another wave of tears.

The day continues to pass in monotony when the office erupts in hushed whispers. Gavin ignores it lost in the sea of endless work. That is until a familiar voice interrupts, "Detective Reed." Gavin freezes mid keystroke. His heart leaps into his throat creating a burning sensation.

"Gavin," Nines calls again. Reed stands so quickly that his chair tips back clattering against the floor. Whipping around to face RK900 he feels his jaw clench. He knows this isn't the same Nines as before but the human brain is easily fooled. It looks, acts, and talks like him.

Two weeks ago plays back in Gavin's mind spurring him forward fist balled. He swings for the Android's face. RK900's LED flashes yellow prior to catching the Detective's punch with his hand. The entire office is so quiet you could hear a pen drop all while everyone watches the exchange. Gavin begins to shake as he clenches his teeth tears dripping onto the tiled floor. "You're not Nines," he forces out between his teeth.

Nines' expression softens as he gentle coaxes, "Gav." Gavin whimpers. Nines pulls him forward until his head connects with his chest.

"Phcking piece of plastic," he sniffs fighting back the sob clawing at his throat, "You..can't do..shit like that. Dammit. I love you...too much."

Nines smirks relieved thirium pump speeding up, "I love you too, Gav. I promise I won't anymore."

"Good," Gavin grunts straightening. As if suddenly remembering the office full of people he turns to them snapping, "What the phck are you looking at?! Get back to work!" Everyone turns back to their workstations making busy.

Hank walks by the two steaming coffee mug in hand announcing, "Welp, he's back."

"It was nice while it lasted, Lieutenant," Connor adds with a nod to RK900 as he follows Hank to their desks. Nines stares at Gavin chuckling as the other male wipes his eyes a smile of his own in place.

Maybe it really is him.
