At the unpleasant sound of a loud knock, Samara jolted awake. She looked frantically around her room trying to get her bearings. After dealing with Rico earlier she was exhausted and decided that taking a nap was easier than cogitating on her broken heart.
"Samara, you in there?"
She sighed at the sound of Zay's voice coming from the other side of the door. She gave herself a few seconds before willing her body to get up. Samara stood from the bed and stretched before slowly shuffling towards the door.
"Hey," she said groggily as Zay's face came into view. "What are you doing here?"
"I just stopped by to see if you were going to A Civ today." A Civ was an abbreviation for their Ancient Civilization class. Zay cocked his head to the side and took notice of Samara's eyes. "Hey. Are you okay," he asked concernedly. Samara disregarded his question.
"Is it almost two?" she asked as she rushed to her night stand to grab her phone. She checked the time. "Oh snap," she groaned. She quickly forced her feet into a pair of shoes and grabbed her bag for class. "I'm glad you came and got me, because I would've been late," she said gratefully.
"What else is new?" Zay teased. A smile slowly appeared on Samara's face.
"Shut up," she said jocularly as she pushed him away.
..
Samara exhaled when she realized they arrived to A Civ before their professor. The two of them walked over to their seats and sat down.
"So what's up witchu?" Zay asked quietly, as he watched Samara pull out her materials for class. "You seemed a little frazzled when I came to the door."
   "I had just woken up."
Zay didn't buy it. "Are you sure that's it? It seemed like it was something else. I know tired Sam and you looked a little more than tired."
Samara sighed heavily. Why is he so observant? she thought to herself. "I don't wanna talk about it right now. Just leave it alone."
"You know I can't do that Samara. You're my best friend. What's up?" Samara looked like she wanted to cry. Zay grabbed her hand and quickly pulled her out into the hallway and into an empty stairwell.
"What's going on? You know you can talk to me about anything." Samara tried hard to fight back tears. "Whatever it is, you know I'm here for you." Zay wiped away the fallen tears from her eyes.
"It's stupid," Samara sniveled. "I probably should've saw it coming."
"I'm not gonna judge you," he said reassuringly.
"Ok, but don't say anything. Please, just don't," she pleaded.
   "You have my word."
Samara took a deep breath and let the words come out. "Rico broke up with me." She looked at Zay and waited for his reaction. He had none.
"You don't even look surprised. Did you know he was gonna break up with me or something?"
"Nah. Not at all," he reassured her. "You told me not to say anything."
   "Right," she said quietly.
"But," Zay continued, "I know that you deserved better than him. This is probably for the best. He obviously didn't value what he had in you."
"I hate that you're right," Samara said moving closer to Zay. She slid her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly. "Thank you. You can be sweet when you wanna be," she teased.
"Don't mention it," he smiled. "That's what friends are for, right?"
