"Um, Nikki, can't we be like co-parents or something?!" Max said as Nikki dragged him by the arm to Harrison's magic show. They sat down and Nikki's eyes lit up as Harrison appeared in a puff of smoke, Max pretended not to notice.

"That's ridiculous, Max! This is the egg we're talking about, we're his happily married parents!" She chirped in response, then getting enthralled in the magic show once more. Max sighed and rested his head on his right hand, this egg thing was going to be the death of him.

It wasn't like he hated the idea of him and Nikki being paired up, she was one of his best friends after all, it was how she was saying her and Max were a couple that bugged him. She probably hadn't meant anything by it, she was just invested in the activity, but it made him feel something he didn't like. It made him feel weak and vulnerable.

When Harrison and Nerris started arguing (something so common it didn't faze anyone anymore) Nikki turned her attention to Max and the egg. "So what do you think our wedding would have been like?" She asked out of the blue. If Max had a drink he would've spit it out at that moment. It wasn't even that strange of a question really, but the fact that Nikki had been saying it to him had made it feel like something completely different.

He was taken aback at first but quickly covered it up with sarcasm. "Non existent, it's an actual fucking egg and neither of us squeezed it out." He said and looked away, fearing that his face would betray and him and he'd blush or something. "Not in front of the egg Max! We need to show him two parents who love each other." Nikki cradled then egg in her arms.

"Whatever, you're taking this shit too seriously. It's weird, and frankly super creepy." Nikki sighed at that and looked a bit hurt. Max only let himself be guilty for a moment. "Fine just be a jerk then!" Nikki quickly got up and ran away with the egg, leaving Max alone. He sighed, he would have to track her down to apologize even though this hardly warranted an apology in his mind.

Max couldn't piece together why she would be so upset for him saying something he usually said, it would normally be offensive but Max said stuff like that all the time to everyone. She shouldn't have been so worked up about it unless his opinion meant that much to her, or she liked him..

He shook his head, that was stupid. Nobody would love him especially not someone like Nikki. She deserved way better than him.

After a few minutes Gwen called everyone into the mess hall for lunch. When Max got into the mess hall he saw Nikki sitting with Nerris and Preston. They briefly locked eyes but Nikki scowled at him and turned away. Max sighed and didn't let his feelings show, didn't let it seem like he cared. He always hated upsetting Nikki.

He took a seat next to Nikki and she glared down at her food. "Oh my fucking god Nikki! Look, I'm sorry for saying you were being weird." Max finally said, he wasn't going to let an egg tear them apart.

"You also said I was being creepy." Nikki was still not looking at him, instead just playing with her food. "Alright then I'm sorry for that too! You're my best friend and I'm not letting an egg make you hate me. I'll go along with your egg thing until it hatches, it's still stupid but I'll do it." He subconsciously put his hands in his pockets, it was something he always did when he felt vulnerable or embarrassed.

Suddenly Nikki hugged him and he was frozen in place. "Thanks Max, you're the best husband ever!" She said and if Max wasn't already completely in shock he was now. Just when Max thought that Nikki couldn't do anything else that made him feel more flustered, she leaned in and kissed him right on the lips.

A lot of things happened at once, Preston started yelling about how romantic and beautiful it was, Nerris was repeating different variations of "I can't believe that just happened.", Neil was asking what the fuck they were doing, David was trying to give them a lecture about how that wasn't appropriate, and everyone else was just as shocked as Max.

Max was still not sure what to say, what do you say to your best friend kissing you? All he could get out was "Nikki..." before she ran off. It was like she only now realized what she did.

He didn't try and find Nikki again because he figured she wanted to be alone. He felt even worse and confused than he did before. She had kissed him, did that mean Nikki liked him?  Was she just roleplaying and got freaked out when everyone started yelling and stuff? Would they just forget about it? He had no idea.

After lunch Nikki still hadn't came back and Gwen said she'd go look for her. Max went up to Nerris' castle and called for her. "Hey Nerris!" He yelled and she popped her head out of the top of the castle. "What?"

"You share a tent with Nikki so can you tell her to meet me at the lake tonight? I need to talk to her." Max wasn't used to being so polite but he wanted Nerris to say yes. Nerris thought for a moment but after a little bit she nodded her head yes.

That night Max waited on the dock by lake lilac, watching the fish swim under his feet. Gwen had ended up finding Nikki and apparently they had a talk in the counselor's cabin. Nikki took care of the egg with Gwen for the rest of the day and it ended up hatching. Just when Max was she wouldn't show up he heard footsteps behind him on the dock.

Instead of saying anything Nikki just sat beside him, also taking in the lake on that night. "I'm sorry for what happened.." she said after a few minutes. He turned his head to look at her, noticing how the moonlight reflected in her eyes. "It's okay." He said simply and the silence returned.

After about 30 seconds he touched her shoulder and they faced each other. "Do you have a crush on me?" Max asked, deciding he didn't want to beat around the bush any longer.
She was silent for another moment, looking like she was considering what to say (something she didn't usually do).

"Yeah." said Nikki, looking down at the lake water. He wasn't sure what to say. He felt the same way and he knew that but he was scared to say it out loud for some reason. So instead of speaking he reached down and held one of her hands in his own, and kissed her.

Notes

Sorry if it's not very good, this is my first oneshot so don't go too hard on me. I hope they didn't seem too out of character, especially Max. I feel like I didn't write for him very well but I tried.
