i was already awake and checking twice my stuff before i left the hotel and new york all together.
soon the realisation of not making my dream come true by getting accepted in nyu hit me. if it weren't for those creepy alleys and creepier men, i would have done the presentation that i worked so hard for and i would probably be searching for an apartment in the city right now instead of packing my bags.
i really didn't want to go back. this was my chance to leave my hometown, something i wished for since i was seven, but now i'll be stuck there, at least, until i finish college.
everything was packed up and i was already on my way to the reception to return the key card. i had at least three hours until my flight, so i had a quick breakfast before leaving the hotel only to be met with michael who was waiting against the wall next to the glass revolving door, a cigarette playing around his index and middle finger. smoke came out of his slightly open lips slowly and soon it vanished in the air. he had his head bent down, so he didn't see me when i came out.
"michael, hey. um, what are you doing here?" i asked him and left my luggage on the floor.
"i actually came for three things." he told me as he took the last drag of his cigarette and threw it away. "one is to give you my phone number, in case you want to keep contact with me even after what i'm going to tell you." he took out a piece of paper from his jeans' back pocket, where he had already scribbled his number, and passed it to me. i didn't even have the chance to react to what he had said because he immediately continued. "the second thing is a kiss goodbye, cause all i've been thinking about, since yesterday, is kissing you." he told me and grabbed my waist out of the blue pulling me against him. i smiled but still held the look of surprise on my face. he smiled with me and just stared for a while.
"what are you waiting for?" i whispered and waited for his lips to touch mine again. that's all i've been craving since last night. he chuckled and shook his head before pressing his lips on mine, gradually deepening the kiss. however the kiss ended soon when a man who worked for the hotel told us to be more discreet. we both pulled back slightly and michael spoke again
"now the third thing has to do with something you said last night." he said and took a step back. "you told me you didn't know what kind of person i am. well, i want to tell you. i think you have to know."
i looked at him with furrowed eyebrows, trying to remember saying those words among the many hours we passed together, talking and whatnot. of course, i could remember nothing, but i really wanted to hear what he had to say, so i nodded urging him to continue.
"i know this is probably too much, considering we met just yesterday, but i want to tell you." he gulped. "okay, i'm in a gang." he admitted and i closed my eyes tightly, shaking my head vigorously not accepting this. "wait, hear me out. it wasn't my choice." he told me and looked around. "my father is the leader."
"you're joking, right?" i couldn't believe it. i took a step away from him; this was, indeed, too much for my mind to process.
michael shook his head and looked down. "that's why i'm actually caring a gun and why i knew those bastards." he tried to close the space between us again, but i stepped back once more. "i'm sorry sam."
i took a deep breath and collected my luggage. "thanks for saving me yesterday, don't think i forgot that. it was nice meeting you, michael." i said almost mechanically and turned around leaving him with a frown.
