THE STRANGE TOWN OF SLAUGHTER VALLEY

WELCOME TO SLAUGHTER VALLEY

It was a bright sunny day. The train started with a whistle and rolled towards our destination,our new home. It was sad leaving our hometown. The huge loss in our father's business and the burden of loan forced him to sell our old house. The green lawn where I had played cricket with my late grandfather in my childhood , the garden of Mr. Smith,our neighbour,from where I used to pluck the flowers and then get scolded for it,all I had to leave behind.

I had only imagined about our new residence for I had never visited the place. Dad had told us that it was small but a nice place to live in. The name of the town was 'SLAUGHTER VALLEY'.
The train stopped with a jerk which brought me out of my thoughts. The house was not far away from the station as told by our father,so we decided to walk.

Soon the town came into view. The town turned to be a total contrast to my expectations. There were dilapitated house along the streets. There was not even a trace of malls,cinemas and all that you would find in a well developed city. I wondered as to why there were a lot of cemetries and hospitals.

I suddenly felt that we were being followed by someone. I looked around but saw no one. I told my parents about it but they said that it was only my imagination. However now and then I felt that someone was moving by my side.

Dad said,"Welcome to our sweet little home!" I lifted my eyes and noticed that it was just the contrast of 'sweet'. For me it was a horror house. The windows stretched like big,staring eyes and the door seemed to be a huge mouth ready to swallow anything.

While mom and dad started taking out the luggage,I decided to discover the secrets of our new home. I didn't know that it would turn out to be the most horrifying experience in our life.

The door opened with a loud creak. There was a long doorway which lead to a downstairs probably to a basement. There were cracks in floorboards. There were a lot of cobwebs on the walls. A room came into view. There was long dusty table in the middle and some broken chairs. There was also a broken chandelier. It was probably a dining room.

Crash!There came a sound of glass smashing. A shiver ran down my spine. I quietly moved in the direction from where the noise came. It lead into what seemed to be a kitchen. There were shelves probably for keeping utensils. The sink gave a pungent choking smell. There were windows which looked out onto the streets. I stepped on some broken glass pieces which probably could have caused the noise. I felt some movement under the sink. I backed away towards the door. The creature sprang towards me. I screamed in fright. I closed my eyes and prayed to God to save myself. A few seconds later I felt a hand on my shoulders. I was even more scared. However gathering courage I opened my eyes. I was relieved to see that it was my mother. I said to her, my voice shaking,"There is a dangerous creature in this house. It tried to kill me." My mother calmed me down saying that it was only a small cat. I felt embarrassed for I used to be one of the toughest guy in the school and getting scared of a cat was really shameful.

Soon we arranged all our belongings in our rooms. Mine was a very small one with no ventilation and moreover I had to clean it myself. At dinner, we all were silent as if someone as muted all of us. I could not take the silence anymore and said,"Are there any malls or restaurants in his town?" To my dismay the answer was no. The only thing that brought a smile to my face was that I didn't have to attend any school till my parents have found a good one. I retired early bed wishing that the coming day might be nice one.

I woke up late in the morning. I had a very bad dream. I was trapped outside my house. I tried to go in but the same cat that I had seen yesterday closed the doors and then then it became bigger and bigger and then it swallowed me.

I heard my mother calling out to me for lunch. I got ready and went downstairs. I had my lunch and decided to take a look of this town.

As I came out, I noticed a boy in baggy trousers and t-shirt staring at me. I ignored him and strolled away towards what seemed to be a library. Just a few seconds later, I turned around and to my astonishment the boy was gone as if he had vanished into thin air. I was puzzled as well as scared. It came to my mind that he was the same boy following us the previous day. I tried to force the thoughts out of my mind. Books are said to be a man's best friend so I proceeded towards the library to calm my mind. Little did I know that it would worsen my present situation.

The library was as old as the hills. It looked more as an ancient museum rather than a library. There were high stacks of books piled neatly. There was a long reading table in middle. I picked up a book named
'THE HISTORY OF THE SLAUGHTER VALLEY'. My love for history compelled me to read it. The book was old and dusty so I slammed it intentionally on the table to dust it off.
As I opened the book I felt as if I was being pulled inside and then I was falling down from a great height. I was screaming then everything went black. I opened my eyes and found myself standing at the gate of the library. It was the same town but it looked different. There came the sight of a hospital and the huge crowd before it. Something compelled me to go there so I walked towards it.
I went inside and what a horrible sight it was!! Children were lying on stretchers. Their flesh rotting as if dead bodies not buried. The putrid smell,I can never get that horrible sight out of my mind.
I came out breathing hardly in want of fresh air. I felt relieved to be out of that ominous hospital.
I turned my head around to find a way out of this nightmare and saw the same children standing outside, their eyes fixed on me and chanting,"You will make us alive. You will repent coming to this town." I was trapped between dead. I knew it would be my end but . . . .
