Your mind and heart were racing as you sat up in bed. Beads of sweat rolled down your skin, the memory of the terrible dream you'd had played continuously in your brain no matter how much you tried to stop it.

You looked over at Brittany, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest as she slept soundly. She was unphased, out like a light after a long day. You tried to resist the growing urge to wake her, but it was impossible. You were trembling. You yearned for her arms to be wrapped around you; to feel that security you only feel when she's holding you and feel the love radiating from her beating heart that always made you feel safe.

You needed that.

You reached over and let your hand fall to her back. You could feel the soft fabric of her favorite sweater against the tips of your fingers. You felt her breathe for a moment, just to remind yourself that she was there and she was alright.

You slowly shook her awake and called her name until her eyes fluttered open.

"Y/N?" She rolled onto her back, looking at the clock on her bedside table. It was only three in the morning; much too early for her eyes to be fluttering open.

"Brittany? Are you awake?"

Your voice trembled. She knew something was wrong right away. So, she shook off the tired feeling that continued to linger and fought to keep her heavy eyes open, for you.

"Yeah, baby. I'm awake. Are you okay?"

You moved closer to her and let your head fall to her shoulder. "No. I had a bad dream."

She pulled you into her arms, just like you wanted. "I'm sorry you had a bad dream. It's alright now, though. I'm here, okay?" She kissed your head, letting her lips linger as she inhaled the scent of your shampoo that lingered in your hair. "Do you wanna talk to me about it? I'm here to listen."

You were hesitant. But it continued to replay in your brain. You knew you were safe in her arms, so you knew getting it all off of your chest would be helpful.

"I was just walking, enjoying some fresh air, "
you paused, closing your eyes and sucking in a deep, shaky breath to try to calm yourself down as you thought back to the terrible dream. "And then someone was chasing me. I tried to outrun them but I couldn't. It felt like I was running in slow motion and they weren't and I,"

You were starting to grow a little frantic as you spoke, so Brittany interrupted you. "Shh." She whispered in your ear. "It's okay. That sounds scary, I imagine it really shook you up. I understand that. But, baby, you're safe. I'm here with you. I promise you that no one is gonna hurt you. I'd never let them."

You cracked a small smile. Her comforting words and her hands brushing along your arms soothingly calmed you. The memory of the nightmare began to fade away as you focused on her; on the way her chest rose and fell against your back. Her scent. Her fingertips traveling along your skin to remind you that she was right there with you. Her words that assured you nothing would ever be able to hurt you when she was around.

A moment of silence passed by, but it was a comfortable one.

"You okay? Feeling a little better?"

You nodded slowly and sucked in a deep breath. "Yeah. I'm okay."

She laid back and pulled you down with her. Arms wrapped around you, she still made you feel secure even now that your head was back against the pillows and the sleepiness was starting to return, quickly taking over you.

"I love you." You mumbled.

"I love you too. You're safe, baby. Get some rest. I'll be here if you need me anymore tonight." She said and kissed your head before combing her fingers through your hair and watching you drift back off to sleep.
