Amon was relieved, but confused by the ghoul's words. Nagachika, on the other hand, appeared to be stunned.
Hide stood frozen where he was, his hands still posed as if he held the package, as Kaneki tore into the parcel teeth-first. It was a bloody mess, and Amon felt sick to his stomach just watching. Only when Kaneki started crying did Hide snap out of it, and finally seemed able to move. He rummaged in his bag for another package, then sat down beside the sobbing ghoul.
"It's okay, Kaneki. I get it now. I understand why you refused. What you wanted to keep. And it's ok. I'm here." He put his hand on Kaneki's shoulder and offered him the second package. Kaneki looked up at him, wide eyed. His red and tear-stained face shined, powerfully vulnerable and raw, against the fluorescent lighting. Hide didn't have to say anything; his expression confirmed Kaneki's hesitant hopes, and though the tears still streamed they were no longer of despair.
As his revulsion faded away Amon felt embarrassed of all things, as if he were looking in on something private. The moment between these two was personal —if not confusing for the poor investigator— and Amon felt like an imposter. When Kaneki willingly took the second package from Hide's hands Amon felt another bout of nausea hit him, and it was all he needed in order to decide: time to go.
"I'll... I'm gonna..." he was out the front door before he could come up with an excuse.
Frankly, he was surprised Hide was staying, much less holding him.
