Before coming back to Firdousi's that night, Abdul-Sharif checked in with Asiya to find out if Firdousi had calmed down and how she was.
"She's scared to death you're going to divorce her."
"But, why?"
"She's afraid she can't have kids."
"That explains...," he thought aloud.
Abdul-Sharif came in quietly and held Firdousi while she slept. In the morning they talked. He came to understand her fears and frustrations and Firdousi learned that having more children was not essential to him, that her value to him was independent of that. She also learned that the only way Abdul-Sharif was going to respond to her point of view was if she gave it. "I can't know what you're thinking if you don't tell me," he said.
