The house is entirely in the dark, except for a lampshade at the bottom of the stairs.

Since my mother didn't pack any comfortable t-shirts, I had to put on one of the flimsy silk slips that she always tried to have me wear.

Slowly and very carefully, I make my way down the stairs on my bare feet.

The stairs give out little squeaks here and there. It sounds so loud in my head that I freeze every time, scared that it will wake up the entire household.

All quiet.

I take the last steps even more carefully. My heart pounding in my ears.

At the bottom of the stairs, I hesitate for a moment, trying to decide... Should I go down the hall to the study where I would probably be able to find an address?

No. Better go to the kitchen where I'll have a plausible excuse if I'm caught... Water, a snack, milk.

Patience is a virtue, right? So, I open the fridge, grab the milk, a glass, and set it all on the kitchen island.

Then, I find a plate and cut a slice of the delicious gingerbread cake, beautifully displayed on the kitchen counter.

I set it all up as if I had come down for a midnight snack, even taking a bite and topping it with milk.

Perfect.

The phone sits right behind me, so I can quickly turn to my snack if I hear anyone coming.

The landline is working, thank God.

I dial Luka's new number, hoping that he will answer an unknown number. Hoping that he hasn't given up on me.

It rings once...

"Gaby?"

I feel as I can breathe again. "Luk..."

Dumbfounded, I stare at the headset in my hand. "What happened?"

But when I turn to look at the disconnected phone, a calloused hand grabs my wrist and I am shoved abruptly into a hard and naked torso.

"Jeremy?"

"What do you think you're doing, little bird?"

Pressing my palms to his tattooed chest, I try to push away but he has both his hands tightly wrapped around my biceps.

I am not going anywhere...

"I wanted more gingerbread and I was hoping to talk to my best friend, Mina."

"At two-thirty in the morning?" His eyes narrow on me.

"It's the west coast! I'm sure she's still awake and worried about me!" My voice comes out a bit shaky as I still fail to find a way out of his hold.

"Let go of me! I haven't done anything wrong!"

But instead of releasing me, Jeremy pushes me back against the wall.

"That's debatable..." He presses his entire body to mine, making it impossible for me to escape. "Are you going to keep giving me trouble, little bird? Do I have to lock you in your room?"

Infuriated, I start to struggle harder, wiggling my hips to try and make some space in between us when...

"Mmmm..."

I freeze instantly, mortified with his... reaction.

His hard rock member presses against my lower stomach with only the thin fabric of his cotton pajama pants and my silk slip in between us.
