Chapter 2:
POV 1: Sadie Kane
Carter and Sadie Kane's lives had gone sideways about three hours before Percy Jackson's call. (Carter is saying I am being too dramatic. Brother dear, narrating in third person doesn't mean I can't be dramatic. Carter is shaking his head now; I can't imagine why.)
Their lives had been perfect as of late, or perfect as they could be in Brooklyn house. Sadie was perfectly happy with her boyfriend with her boyfriend, Walt Stone (who was hosting the god Anubis, who was also in love with Sadie.) Meanwhile, Carter and Zia Rashid, who had moved into Brooklyn House after the War with Apophis, were also going really well. Most of the magicians were excelling in their powers (even the ankle-biters!) and they were also getting new magicians every month or so. The First Nome was being handled by the Carter and Sadie's uncle, Amos Kane, who was also the Chief Lector.
However, on the day of the phone call, as Carter called everyone for breakfast, Sadie heard someone knock on the wooden block that guarded the door to the Brooklyn House. She and Carter exchanged a glance. This only happened if there was a new magician who didn't know how to control their powers, or a demon looking for them to open the gate to their home. It could also be a confused mailman who was asking whether there was a baboon called Khufu who had ordered a pack of Oreos. (That happened sometimes)
Carter and Sadie walked over to the entrance together, as they often did, to open the door. Sadie summoned her wand from the Duat and looked at Carter.
At his nod, Sadie spoke, "W'peh"
The Egyptian hieroglyphics for open blazed in the sky:
The wooden block slowly slid open to the right. Standing on the other side was a fourteen-year-old boy. Sadie let out a breath of relief and Carter's shoulders visibly relaxed.
But as Sadie studied the boy closely, her breath caught for just a second. No, it couldn't be. The boy had caramel blond hair, with fair skin but his eyes were different than most. They were a swirling rainbow with different colors fighting for dominance but the victor seemed to be sea green, which was the most prominent of the rest.
The boy fidgeted nervously, "Is this Brooklyn House?"
Carter seemed to come out of a state of shock. Sadie realized that Carter was thinking the same thing she was.
He edged forward and smiled at the younger boy, "Yes, this is Brooklyn House, also known as the Twenty-First Nome. My name is Carter, and this is my sister, Sadie."
The boy looked at the interior at wonder before realizing that they were waiting for him to make his introduction, "Oh right, sorry. My name is Augustus, but my friends call me August. August Kane."
Sadie's mind came to a stop. Her eyes opened to the widest they had ever gone. Carter seemed to be in a similar state, with his jaw nearly touching the floor. What had the boy just said? Was he related to them? Maybe Uncle Amos... No! Uncle Amos would have told them... Right?
