⚠️ Mild Violence and Disturbing Imagery
Dan and Molly headed back to Pete's trailer after getting their luggage from the hotel. The sun was setting, and there were no other cars on the road. The stretch of road was very dark, there were dense woods on both sides. Soon it was fully dark, and the full moon rose.
"I'm sick of being in the car, can you drive a little faster?" He picked it up to 55. Molly leaned over and fiddled with the radio dial.
Dan was thinking about the story he planned to write, silently coming up with ideas. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Molly lean forward farther in her seat. She sat back with something black dangling from her hand.
"What is this? Are these panties!? They're not mine!" Molly screamed at him. "You son of a bitch! You unbelievable piece of shit!"
"Kitten..I.."
"Don't! You fucking jackass!"
Neither of them noticed the eyes shining through the trees until it was too late. A black shape leaped out from the tree line and stopped directly in front of the car. Dan slammed on the brakes, but they were still going fast when they hit it. It felt and sounded like a bomb went off in the car.
He was aware of his head lying on the steering wheel with his arms down at his sides, and the horn blaring. He felt Molly patting his shoulder and shaking him gently until he opened his eyes and sat back in the seat. His face hurt.
"Are you OK?" she asked.
"Yeah, I think so. Did I hit a deer?"
"Yes, Captain Obvious." she got out to check the damage.
The car was still running—a good sign. He steered it to the shoulder of the road and then parked so he could get out and see how bad the damage was. The passenger side headlight was busted and didn't appear to be working. He didn't have time to examine the car any further.
A pack of dogs bounded out of the woods and straight toward the dead deer in the road. The lead Rottweiler spotted the couple and charged at them. Dan and Molly ran for the woods.
The dog chased them but suddenly stopped right at the edge of the forest and sniffed, snout in the air. Then the Rottweiler whipped around with a yelp and ran back to join the others in their feast of deer.
"Hey... I see lights over there." Molly pointed farther into the woods. "I think there is a house over there if the lights are on; they must be home. Let's go see if they will let us use their phone."
They had walked about 20 paces when the lights winked out. "Hurry!" Molly broke into a run. Dan's head still hurt, so he kept it to a slow jog. Even that was painful, so after about five minutes of this, and no house in sight, he stopped.
"Geez, how far away is this house?" he grumbled. "I think we should head back to the car."
"Yeah, OK." Molly agreed, "But I still want to know what those lights were." Molly stood still, looking back toward where they had seen the lights. "Did you hear a baby crying?"
Dan stopped and listened. "No, I hear nothing."
"I hear it... faintly, coming from this way." Molly said, and started that direction again. Dan followed. There was a full moon, so they could see where they were going. Molly broke into a jog,
Dan didn't keep up, and he quickly lost sight of her. He called her name, "Molly, wait up... please!"
"Dan! Over here. Follow my voice, sweetheart."
