lana sits on the ratty couch in her living room. a day off work and flora at her father's, it was the perfect opportunity to sit and mull without the prying questions from her kin. river was getting married. it wasn't that she was upset per se, shocked was more like it. shocked that as he delivered that information to her, lana found herself feeling wistful. ever since junior high, it had been lana and river against everyone else. even during the divorce which was full of fights and awful words thrown back and forth, lana found herself finding comfort in what they used to be. young and in love.
a soft sound comes from the front door, one falling just short of a knock. startled, lana jumps up from the couch to answer it. bruised and beaten, jj stood under the doorframe, eyes shining with tears.
"can you help me?"

"first, i almost get strangled to death by kooks, and now i'm on the hook for 30 grand. we should just dip." jj said, defeatedly. of course, the one day that flora is away is when jj finds himself in the most trouble.
"okay, where do you wanna go? hm?" john b quipped back.
"yucatan." jj stated.
"yucatan." john b laughed.
"no, i'm dead serious right now. surf all day, and then we can just live off lobsters we catch with our bare hands." jj continued.
"you just wanna leave 'cause you got your ass beat?" john b throws his hands up in dismay. this was not his best friend, jj never rolled over for anyone, except...
"you didn't see the photos." he replies, "i have people i love john b. a family that i can't lose!"
"think about it. they're willing to kill for the gold, then it's gotta be out there, jj! imagine what that could do for flora! she's who you're talking about right?"
jj shakes his head, "have you lost your mind? 100 years, man. 100 years, people have been trying to find this royal merchant, and no one succeeded. and you think you are gonna be the one to actually find it? when are you gonna get it in your thick skull, if you keep going down this road, you're gonna end up just like your dad!"
