It had been one semester into freshman year, and Ji Eun was already exhausted. She rubbed her temples in frustration, her head was pounding and yet not a single word was written for her essay. She slammed her head hopelessly against her desk, giving up right then sounded like a wonderful idea.
She ignored the negative thoughts that filled her brain, and moved towards her room door. After a minute of staring at a wall, Ji Eun decided to take her mind off of the never-ending pile of work and get a fresh start in the morning. The girl opened the door of her room- only to be greeted by a suspiciously silently house. This wasn't usually the case, Ji Eun's family wasn't exactly the quietest family. Her younger sister Ji Aye was the walking definition of loud; Jaemin was, well, Jaemin.
She walked through the silent house, her heartbeat slowly increased. The dreadful feeling fell over Ji Eun as each room passed by but not a family member in sight. "Ji aye? Mom? Dad?"
No answer.
She tried again this time with her brother's name. Still, no response. She walked towards the last room in the house. It was Jaemin's. She begged internally everyone was in there but deep down she felt otherwise. Hesitantly, Ji Eun knocked on the wooden door. When there was once a gain no replies, she felt her heart drop. Fear lined her body, her arms covered in evident bumps. She extended her hand towards the metal door knob, and twisted it. The door creaked open to reveal, no one. At least she couldn't make out anyone in the lack of light.
Her heart dropped and for some reason she suddenly felt numb. Tears began to stream down her face at full force. "Where the fuck did you guys go?" she breathed out. She opened the light to the room not expecting what she saw next.
"Surprise..?" Jaemin said more questioning than in a cheerful tone. The corners of the room were filled with people, Jaemin's friends, Rima, Ji aye, and her parents. Ji Aye looked at her sister with pity. "We wanted to surprise you for your birthday. Why do you look sad?" the little girl gave her sister a sadended expression before getting up to hug her. Ji Eun chuckled at herself tears still evidently on her face "I thought something happened to you guys."
Rima stood up with a cake in her hand. It was a simple vanilla cake. "Happy birthday!" she looked around at the others motioning them to stand up and gather around the girl. "Thank you guys." Ji Eun smiled. She held the cake examining it. She hugged her mother who was smiling widely at her daughter's expression.
After some heartfelt hugs and birthday wishes, the group moved over into the family room near the table. After singing her the happy birthday song, she cut the white frosted cake. It felt nice to celebrate her birthday this way- with all of her friends and family.
"Who got the cake? Its very pretty" Ji Eun said, smiling down at the baked treat. Jisung smiled widely and pointed at the boy who was busy conversing with Haechan "It was Renjun!". She looked over at Renjun, a small smile tugging at his lips as he talked to the boy in front of him.
Ji Eun felt the butterflies again. Her heart was beating fast, why did he make her feel that way? She sighed and walked towards the back door of her house. She slipped on her sneakers and made her way to the back, opening the patio door to her back yard.
She inhaled the late november air, her hair blowing slightly to the sudden impact of coming outside. She made her way towards the balcony leaning her arms on the wooden railing. It was nice, the feeling of being in the open. Ji Eun tilted her head towards the starry sky, her mind immediately thinking of Renjun's eyes. The way he had the entire galaxy in his eyes. The girl smiled unknowingly with her gaze still on the icy stars that were scattered among the dark sky.
"Why can't I stop thinking about you?" Ji Eun breathed out. She felt hopeless, but didn't want to let go. "Thinking about who?". The fifteen year old turned around halfway, upon hearing the voice. "Jeno.." She started, her voice came out as more of a fragile whisper. He walked over the balcony and stood next to her "Did you like the cake?". Ji Eun nodded excitedly "It was really the prettiest cake I have ever seen. I can't believe that Renjun actually got it for me."
Jeno furrowed his eyebrows "Renjun?", Ji Eun tilted her head "Didn't he?". Jeno shook his head "I got it for you. I thought you would've known it was me" He trailed off as he rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. The girl widened her eyes "I'm sorry! Jisung told me it was Renjun. I didn't know" He gave her a weak smile "Its oka-"
Jeno was cut of by a hug. She wrapped her arms tightly around the boy. "thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you so much. You don't understand how happy I felt seeing that cake today. It really made my birthday so special, possibly the most special so far. I got to celebrate it with everyone I love with all my heart and nothing makes me happier than that".
Jeno stood still, his heart was beating faster than it had ever before. Maybe if Ji Eun was a little taller she would've heard his heart throbbing uncontrollably. "You're welcome angel" He whispered out. All while a obnoxiously wide smile was displayed across his face.
