"I guess but only for an hour. I need to sleep before I fall on my face." Sam said and Vee jumped up and down clapping.
"Yes! You won't regret it! I'm going to make you look awesome!"
Sam rolled her eyes. Her best friend could be a little annoying sometimes but in a good way. "I already regret it." She teased her and looked up as Levi stood and placed money on the table.
"Well, I'm gonna head out. Thanks for the pancakes Mags, you make the best." He said as he turned around. Vee looked up and stiffened.
"Levi." She bit out between clenched teeth. He froze. What the heck? How did Vee know Levi? She marched over to him. "Where is your brother? Hunter?" She stomped her foot. Levi raised a brow.
Then recognition ran across his face. "Veronica! How are you?" He leaned down and kissed her cheek.
Vee swatted him away. "Don't come at me with that Steel charm. It won't work on me anymore! Now answer my question."
"I'm sure he's around somewhere but I just got back to town and haven't seen him yet." Levi said.
"Yeah, sure. He just left after highschool and never contacted me again! What kind of person does that? Then, I have to see all of the girls he has on his shoulders all over the tabloids. It's embarrassing!" Sometimes Sam forgot that Vee was a rich preppy girl that had gone to a private school. She'd only met her through Ryan. Was that how she knew Levi? School?
"I know Veronica but listen, why don't you move on and find a nice man. Someone that will treat you right." Levi said as he cut his eyes to her over Vee's head. "You know what he's like. Don't waste your life waiting for him."
Vee sniffled. "I know, it's just, he made a promise to me and my family."
"Don't take his promises seriously. He's never kept one." He patted her shoulder.
She straightened. "You're right. I don't need him. I can find someone else." Vee said in a determined voice and then she grabbed him around the neck and kissed him hard. Sam's eyes went wide and her heart stopped. She clenched her fists holding in the jealousy that threatened to boil over.
Levi pushed her away. "Veronica, that's not what I meant." He said and looked back at Sam. She turned away not wanting him to see the look on her face. So she busied herself clearing a table. Maggie came over to help her but Sam kept listening to Vee and Levi.
"It's what I meant, Levi. I always wanted you anyway." She purred and Sam had to hold back a groan. Why was this happening? She didn't care if someone wanted to be with Levi but why did it have to be her best friend?
"I'm sorry. I just don't see you that way." There was a pause and Sam had to fight not to turn around and see what was happening.
"You Steel brothers are all the same. Always wanting something you can't have." Vee said. What did that mean? What was she talking about? Vee had just thrown herself at the guy for him to turn her down and now she was saying he couldn't have her? Sam was so confused. "But maybe I can help with this one." She said to Levi. Sam wasn't sure what was going on. She carried the plates and trash to the back and once everything was put away she took off her apron and went back out.
Vee was still there but Levi was gone. "Hey! Are you ready to go?" She said when she saw Sam come out.
"Yeah. Let me grab my keys." She went around the counter and took her keys from under the register. "I'll drive home and change and then we can go." Her and her best friend left for her house. She followed Vee's red mustang convertible. Watching as her blonde hair danced in the wind. Sometimes she was jealous of the life that Vee had. How would it feel to have grown up being able to do whatever, whenever you wanted?
