Chapter Twelve
One week later.
"It's simple. We're going to ask you a question, you're going to count to five in your head and then answer. Give it enough time so that we can edit it correctly in post," the interviewer says, setting up the spotlight, making sure that the lighting would come out correctly.
AMP Rock TV had reached out to Jen, asked if one of us would be willing to do a spotlight interview, any of the members of Sleeping Alone. Jen felt like with the traction Tony and I were going to be getting on social media after the news dropped, it would be best for me to do it. So, here I am, sitting on a stool in front of a black backdrop, a spotlight directly in front of my face.
"Hit me whenever you're ready," I say, putting on a smile, getting ready to answer the questions I've heard a thousand times.
"Why did you first want to be in a band?"
"Honestly, this is going to sound so bad. I think the first time I realized I wanted to be in a band was when Lily started to joke about it. Her and I were in our apartment and she kept joking about it, saying that her and I should get a couple buddies and start a band.
"I knew how to play drums since high school, but it was more of a party trick. I would play a song here and there to show people that I could. Lily could sing, really well. It all kind of fell into place once we got a hold of Anthony and Brendan."
"When did you realize this band was special?"
"I think I only realized that this bad was special when we got signed. We had played a few shows around town, mainly at some bars. I thought it was just about having some fun with some friends, I never thought that the band would turn into anything bigger than what we were as people. Brendan, Anthony, Lily and I were just trying to have fun on the empty nights."
"What would you have done if the band hadn't worked out?"
"Well, I have a degree in criminology. It's just a basic degree, but it opens a lot of doors. I was working as a youth counselor before I quit that as the band gained some traction. So, I would probably still be there, working that job or maybe I would have started working as a crime scene analyst."
"Do you ever feel anxious about putting your music out into the world?"
"I am always nervous about putting my music into the world. The entire band is. We all put a lot into them. The songs tend to have a lot of meaning behind them, even if the fans don't always see it. We're not always sure how the fans are going to take the music, how they are going to interpret our words. We get asked all the time what certain songs mean, and we all have a different way that we interpret the songs."
"Have you ever felt like you weren't going to make it back from a tour?"
"Uh," I start, letting out a laugh, "uh-yeah. The one right before this tour, the one right before Warped. Bren and I had gone out for a night and we got lost in the UK. I forgot to bring my passport, and so did Bren. Or, I guess I didn't forget I left it on the bus, and Jen doesn't trust Bren not to loose his when he leaves the bus, so he's not allowed to take it places. We went out to a club and my dress didn't have pockets, and I didn't have a bag that would hold my wallet, phone, and passport.
"Bren got hammered, and I was trying to keep him in line, get him back to the bus. He really needed to take a piss, so he started to go on the side of a building in an alley. A cop pulled up, Bren got arrested since he was plaster and had his dick out. I didn't know where we were in the city, and Bren had both of our phones. I didn't think Jen would be able to find us, I was just lucky that I was able to find where they took Bren."
