"Unfortunately, despite our exploration team's best efforts, they failed to catch a glimpse of the rare and oddly colored Pokémon. The rumored red Gyarados managed to avoid detection, even fleetingly, to the crestfallen team..."

"That concludes our special report, 'Search for the Red Gyarados'. This has been Rhonda Smith, reporting for Jubilife T.V. Next week, we will bring you a new report on how you can tell if your Pokémon has caught a rare, contagious, but helpful disease scientists have dubbed the Pokérus. See you here, same time, same channel."

Twelve-year-old Amy Baker got up from her desk chair to turn off her television. Looking at her poster filled with all the known Pokémon in the world, Amy located Gyarados. Generally, this combination Water and Flying-type Pokémon was blue. According to the rumors, there were rare Gyarados out there that were red instead of its usual coloring. Also, if you encountered a wild Pokémon, there was a distinct possibility that it could be off-colored as well. Amy wondered if there really was such a rare-colored Pokémon out there.

"Amy, could you come downstairs for a moment, please?" called a voice from the first floor.

Amy got up from her chair again, wondering what it was her mother wanted. She ran down the stairs, finally jumping off the last two steps and landing quietly on the living room floor. "What's up, mom?" she inquired.

"Hiya Amester!"

Amy looked to the sofa. Jumping up from the couch was Melanie Russell, a neighbor of Amy's and one of her best friends.

"Hey Mel, what are you doing here? And where's Barry?" Barry Russell was Melanie's energetic fraternal twin brother and Amy's other best friend. If Melanie was around, then Barry shouldn't be too far behind.

Mrs. Baker came out of the kitchen, wiping her wet hands on her apron. "Barry and Melanie came calling for you just a few minutes ago," Mrs. Baker answered. "Barry was saying something about an emergency, but then he took off again."

Amy turned back to Melanie, her eyebrows raised questioningly.

"It's not really an emergency," admitted Melanie. "I'll tell you what it is when we get to my house. Barry's already rushed back there, waiting for us."

Amy nodded. "Okay, but wait for a second, all right?" She ran back up the stairs.

"Hey, kiddo, could you be any louder?" asked Amy's fourteen-year-old brother, David.

Amy rolled her eyes. "Jeez David, lighten up."

David glared angrily at his little sister and shut his bedroom door.

Ignoring her older brothers' attitude, Amy ran into her room, slipped out of her pink slippers, put on her red and white boots, her red and white hat, and grabbed her backpack off her desk. Before running down the stairs again, Amy took her house key from her skirt pocket and locked her bedroom door. When she wasn't at home, Amy's eight-year-old sister Dawn had the tendency to sneak into her room and go through all her stuff.

"Bye, mom, see you later," Amy called as she and Melanie started towards the front door.

"Oh, Amy! Hold on a second," Mrs. Baker said.

"Yeah mom?" asked Amy, pausing at the door.

"I don't want another incident of last year's picnic, so stay out of the tall grass," Mrs. Baker said, putting an emphasis on the last six words.

"No need to worry, mom," Amy reassured her mother. "I'll remember this time." She opened the door, and she and Melanie started to run down the street to the Russell's' house.

"So what's this so-called emergency Barry was talking about, anyway?" Amy asked.

"First, did you happen to catch that special on T.V.?"

"You mean the one with the red Gyarados?" Amy said as they stopped in front of Melanie's house.

"Well, Barry had this idea that maybe..."

THUD!!!! The front door suddenly slammed open, interrupting Melanie.

Amy was knocked off her feet and landed on the ground. "Ow!" she cried, rubbing her side.

"Hey what was that all about?" shouted an angry voice.

Amy looked up. Standing in the Russell's front doorway was Barry. "Barry, be careful where you're going," Melanie scolded.

"Jeez, sorry," said Barry.

"Where are we going?" asked Amy, getting up and wiping off the dirt from her skirt.

"To Lake Verity," said Barry. "We're headed over there right now. Now hurry up to the lake and be quick about it! I'm fining you a million Poké dollars if you're late."

Barry quickly started to walk away. Suddenly, he stopped in his tracks. "Oh jeez, I forgot something!" Barry quickly ran back inside the house.

"Barry, hold on a second!" yelled Melanie as she followed after her brother.

Amy shook her head. She wasn't too surprised by Barry's behavior. He was always in a huge rush. She opened the front door and went inside and found Mrs. Russell busy in the kitchen, muttering to herself.

"....always so energetic," she was saying. "They must get it from their father."

Going up the stairs, Amy noticed that Barry's door was wide open, and heard loud voices coming from the room.

"You shouldn't forget stuff so often, Barry," Melanie was saying. "You should've remembered to bring your things with you before you started to head out!"

"Look who's talking!" Barry shot back. "You forgot your bag and Journal, too!"

"Hey!"

Amy cleared her throat. "Eh-hem! Uh, guys?"

Barry and Melanie jumped and turned around. "Oh, it's just you, Amy," said Barry. "We're headed for the lake now, and it's a ten million Poké dollar fine if you're late!" He quickly ran out of the room and down the stairs.

"Enough of those stupid fines already, Barry!" Melanie shouted as she ran after her brother. "You never go through with them in the end!"

Amy smiled and shook her head. 'That's Barry and Melanie for you,' she thought. 'They're best friends one second, and then they're fighting the next.'  She walked out of Barry's room, closed the door, and ran down the stairs. Amy said goodbye to Mrs. Russell and headed out the door.
