The scanning didn't take very long. The doctors and nurses I met along the way were all very nice, which I was thankful for. When the wheel me back to my room, Dominic stands from the chair beside my bed.
"Hey, how was it?" He asks, and I'm not quite sure if he's asking me or the doctor standing behind my wheelchair. I had asked to walk, but my request was turned down- apparently, it'd be on them if I passed out during the walk back. Whatever.
Doctor B, as I've learned his name is, grabs the clipboard that was in the back pocket of my chair. He begins to explain that I'll be fine and will make a quick recovery; if I stay in bed for a week or so.
"I can't, I have a dog I have to take care of," I protest, turning my head to look at him.
He shakes his head but before he can reply Dom speaks up. "I can stay over with you, Cali. Max already loves me. He'll be fine. You need to get better,"
I can't help but smile a bit as I look at him. How did I get so lucky? Why weren't all men as seemingly perfect as Dom? I'll never know.
Doctor B nods. "Perfect. There's some paperwork you'll need to fill out, I'll go grab that. Then you'll be free to go." He says, then leaves the room, returning moments later with some paper, handing them to me.
I fill them all out, not taking long. It was basic stuff, signing, whatever. As I'm handing the papers back to the doctor, a nurse comes in, saying something only Doctor B could hear. He nods, and his face looks as thought she'd just reminded him of something he had forgotten about.
"Calleigha, there is one more thing. There's an officer out front that wants to talk to you, okay? Just a few quick questions, is all." With these words I feel as though I'll faint again. I manage to nod. Doctor B leaves, nodding back.
I turn to look at Dom. "Why is a cop here?" I ask, my words hardly above a whisper.
He shrugs, kneeling to be at my level. "I don't know, okay? It'll be fine. He's probably just going to ask stuff about your injury," He says. "Not everyday does a girl your age come in here with a concussion and no backstory."
I nod. Oh god. What will I tell him?
Dom wheels me out, but halfway down the hallway I assure him I can walk. No reason to seem more hurt than I am. Yes, my head hurts, but the painkillers Doc gave me are helping a tremendous amount.
When we round the corner to the main office of the hospital I see the officer waiting. He walks over to us.
"Good afternoon, Ma'am. Could we speak outside for a moment before y'all leave?" He asks, glancing between Dom and I.
I nod, "Yes, of course,"
Once we're outside, we find a bench near the doors and take a seat, with the officer standing in front of us. He pulls out a little paper pad and a pen, clicking it open before looking back at us.
"So, I just have a few questions for you guys, but first, here's what I know: someone from your apartment complex called 911 for a domestic disturbance, saying two men were fighting, with a young girl involved. When we arrived to the scene, though, no one was there. We knocked on the door and no one answered, so we figured all had been resolved. Then I happened to pop in today on an unrelated matter and see that you had been admitted last night with a concussion, with no one seeming to know what caused it." He pauses and looks at me. It felt like he already knew the answer to the question he was going to ask, I could feel it. "So, I'd like to know what happened last night; how you got this concussion of yours? I can already see that your friend here has a busted up face."
