Buzz buzz. Sage herd her phone vibrating, and decided to leave it where it was. She could feel the dried up mascara on her face and was still slightly shaking. These past months had been the worst ones of all her years. A week or two ago it felt as if everything was finally coming back to normal, the good way. Then of course knowing it was too good to be true, her grades came in.  Buzz Buzz. Her phone went off for a second time, then third time. After the 4th she finally picked it up. It was Mase.

“Can we go get a bite? I think I’ll starve to death if we don’t. And yes you do have to come, you know how I feel about eating in public alone."

      "How about Chronic Tacos?"

     "Ooo or maybe Cassidy' Grill?!"

“You have 20 seconds to respond before I blow up your phone ;)”

Reading the text made Sage laugh for the first time all day. Mase was always really good at that. He always knew just the right thing to say.

      “Chronic sounds great!” She replied

Within just seconds of her sending it she got a response – Another thing she loved about him – His quick replies.

“Then queen has replied and saved her phone from obliterating! I’ll pick you up in fifteen?”

“Make it ten, you’re on the clock!” Sage challenged

     "Ready, set go!"

Sage looked at the time on her phone. 1:18 am. She walked over to her body mirror, she pushed her long blonde hair behind her ears and studied herself in the mirror. Long legs – the adidas sweats she was wearing made them look longer than they already were – She was wearing a grey Softball sweatshirt she had gotten when she was a sophomore at a tournament in Colorado. She pulled out a makeup wipe and began wiping off her makeup off from the day. As she closed her eyes the words started coming back to her. Stupid, Not good enough, never going to amount to anything. Hearing her parents say these things were rough enough but when she became the family idiot for not having straight A’s like the rest of her family crushed her. Sage looked up from the wipe into the mirror she looked at her now green eyes and took a deep breath “You can make it, i know you can. Your strong.” She whispered to herself. Buzz buzz. She first looked at the time on displayed at the top of her phone 1:27 am a minute to spare

“I’m out front. There is also a slight possibility that I have two boards strapped to the top of my car, grab a suit Sage it’s a full moon and Taco Tuesday”

Sage couldn’t help but grin – she loved surfing but she loved it even more with the moon watching over her. Her parents had taken all of her boards and hid them. Thank god all of her friends had surf boards. She grabbed her suit and stuffed it into her purse. She checked her parent’s room to be sure they were asleep then slipped out her bedroom window and into Mase’s truck.

“Sage! You made it passed the rays!” Mase applauded her

- Rays were what Jase had started too referring to her parents as when he found out they stole her boards. He was stung by a sting ray right as he was going out to surf and claimed they stole a whole beautiful day of sunshine and surf from him and Sages parents were doing the same thing to her-

“Thank God I did! Another minute in that house I might be the one who blows up not my phone!”  Sage joked but she knew it might be some what true

Mase laughed and they hugged and he started the engine. He was wearing black jeans cuffed at the bottom like always with a black and grey stripped shirt. He ran his fingers threw his messy brownish blonde hair. He did that often – run his figures through his hair – She thought it was kind of cute. He was kind of cute. But she has had a huge crush on the 2nd basemen Trevor Slick on Mase’s baseball team since they were in the 8th grade. Trevor and Mase have been best friends since they were in Kindergarten and had always been the perfect 2nd base, shortstop battery.

“I really don’t think I could be happier now that Chronic is open 24/7!” Mase said interrupting Sage’s thoughts

“I know right! Because everyone loves a fish taco with black beans at 1:30 in the morning!”

“They’d be crazy not to! So how are things at home?”

“Good?” Sage almost questioning herself “Great yeah it’s great.”

It must have been obvious she was lying. because he said her name in that voice. That voice you use when you are trying to be firm with someone “Sage.”

“Okay fine it’s not the best but I’ll get through it. Just a couple more months and me you and all our friends will be cruising to Nor Cal”

Mase grinned “We’ll get through it, I promise.” Sage smiled back at him”

Mase always knew what to say to or do to boost her spirts. He was a great best friend.
