"I haven't slept so well in a while. For once I woke up before my alarm went on" Summer said as she sat on her bed. She reached for her phone. "Goddamn it! It's 6:30?! I'm gonna be late! And on the first day of school. Why is this happening to me?!" She exclaimed as she threw herself into the bathroom.

It was 8:00 and Summer was nowhere to be found at school. As the doors were about to be closed, a voice was heard from afar. "Wait! Don't close the doors!" It was Summer. "Young lady, why are you arriving at this time?" the principal, Mrs. Benson asked. "I'm sorry Principal Benson I lost track of time and...." "Enough. I'll pardon you today but you won't be so lucky next time. Now get to class!" the principal scolded. Summer knew they had chemistry first period so she made her way to the chemistry lab. The class had already begun. And the attendance was being taken. The teacher, Miss Hadder reached Summer's name. "Summer Hathaway. Summer Hathaway? Is there no one called Summer Hathaway in this class?" Miss Hadder yelled. "Present Ma'am" Summer yelled as she banged the door open. "You're six minutes late. Have a seat" Miss Hadder said as she took down Summer's attendance. She looked back up and noticed that Summer was still standing and said "You can sit over there, right next to Avan Miner." Summer's heart skipped a beat. That was the last place she wanted to sit at, next to Avan. But she had no choice so she sat down next to him feeling very cautious. "Why did I have to be late? I could've gotten a better sitting position. Anyway, I can still exchange seats with someone else later so...I guess it's all good." she said to herself.

"Okay, class our topic for today is Nuclear Chemistry. And before I forget, the person you're sitting with is going to be your permanent lab partner for the rest of the year. I did not say for the rest of the day, or week or term. I said for the rest of the year. And anyone who exchanges partners will get severe punishment. Am I clear on that? Miss Hadder said. "Yes, ma'am" the students chorused. Summer was petrified but she decided to accept the situation in good faith.

"Can anyone define nuclear chemistry"? the teacher asked. No one volunteered to answer the question so she picked someone to do the honors. "Yes, Avan. Please define Nuclear Chemistry." she said. As Avan stood, all eyes turned to him. The girls captured by his good looks and the boys glaring with jealousy. "Nuclear chemistry is the sub-field of chemistry dealing with radioactivity, nuclear processes and transformations in the nuclei of atoms such as nuclear transmutation." Avan answered. "And that is correct. Thank you Avan."the teacher said. Everyone was amazed at how cool Avan was while answering the question. "So he's not dumb after all. Then I guess he's not that bad." Summer said to herself.

The dismissal bell rang and the students started packing their stuff to head home. As Summer was getting her stuff together, she searched for the invitation cards for her birthday so she could hand them out to her classmates on her way home. She found it next to Avan's jacket. That's when she remembered that she had to return the jacket to Avan. She decided to give the invitation card to Avan as well. She looked around the class for Avan but couldn't find him so she rushed out to go find him before he left the school.

"Avan! Avan, wait up!" Summer yelled as she ran to Avan. He stopped and turned around. "Thanks for giving me your jacket the other day. You can have it back now. And I also wanted to invite you to my birthday party tomorrow as a way of thanking you." Summer said stretching out her hand to give the jacket and Invitation card to Avan. "Thanks for the invite. Keep the jacket" Avan said and walked away. "But I " her speech was cut when her besties called out to her. "Hey, Summer!" Kylie yelled. "Hey guys, how ya doin'" Summer asked. "Uhm, I think we should be the one asking you that. You sat next to Avan Miner today. How did it feel?" Renay said. "Come on, you guys enough with the petty gossip and just help me hand out these cards. "Yes, ma'am" Kylie and Renay chorused. They handed out all the cards and went home afterwards.

The next day at 6:00 pm, people started coming in for Summer's party. At 6:30, the party began. She received so many birthday wishes and gifts from her friends. The real party began when the DJ hit the jams. It was so fun but something or should I say someone had to ruin the fun.

Vicky came in and the first thing she did was to turn off the music. "Awwn, did I ruin your little party? Vicky said. "Vicky? What are you doing here? I didn't invite you to my party." Summer said. "I know. I just decided to drop by to give you a little birthday present" Vicky replied with a smirk. Everyone at the party was staring at them. Summer opened the gift and screamed. It was the worst present she had ever received. A stuffed doll which was nailed with office pins all over and nearly torn to bits. It was terrifying."What is this? You call that a birthday present? You know Vicky, I didn't know you were this devious. You're a total party spoiler." Summer said as she backed away from Vicky. "Yeah, I'll take that as a compliment. And since it's your birthday, I think you also deserve a birthday cake." Vicky said as she shoved a plate of cake on Summer's face. Summer got really sad and ran out of the house. Her best friends tried to follow her but she was long gone.

Summer ran to the ice rink. And stood there to get a breather as she wiped off the cake with her handkerchief. Avan lived close to the ice rink. He was on his way to Summer's party when he spotted Summer on the rink. "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be at your party?" Avan asked.

Summer turned and was shocked to see that it was Avan. "Why are you out here?" Summer asked surprised, "I live nearby" Avan replied. "I really can't believe Vicky. She showed up and ruined my party. She should know how important this party is to me. My sweet sixteen. She's a really mean person." Summer said as she started crying. "So you thought the best thing to do was go run away?" Avan asked. "Well, why not. I was so embarrassed." Summer sobbed. "Want some advice? Next time you should stand up to her and not run away like an idiot. That attitude doesn't suit you. Now, stop crying. It makes you look like an old hag." Avan said as he gave Summer a hug. "Hey, Avan, where's my birthday gift?" "I gave you my jacket. That was your birthday gift." You're mean too, Avan. Do you know that?" Summer said. "Yeah, I get that a lot." Avan replied. Summer decided to be strong and face Vicky head on instead of feeling embarrassed and running away each time Vicky did something mean to her. "Avan, I'm ready to go back home." Summer said. "Okay. I'll walk you there" Avan replied. "Vicky should just wait because she hasn't seen the last of Summer Hathaway." Summer said. Finally ready to let Vicky have a taste of her own medicine.
