Starting Over

Chapter 2

My dad’s wife and kids – Oh god, were they his? – Stared at me and I stared right back. The woman was tall with shoulder length curly dark brown hair with wide, bright blue eyes.

Dick walked over to her and wrapped his arm around her. “Arianna, this is my wife Mary Miller,” he told me, while she flashed me a forced smile — like she expected me to turn into some incest child, and steal my father from her. Uhm, ew. She can keep him.

“Yeah, hi,” I said, trying not to sound disrespectful.

One of the other people stepped forward from behind Mary. A guy, around a year or so older than me flashed me a grin. He had shaggy dark brown hair — like his mother’s, only straight. It hung into his eyes slightly, and did that flip thing. He had the same bright blue eyes as Mary. Skater type? That was my guess, but he had the build to be a football player. Oh, gross! Why did I just check out my possible half-brother?

“I’m Alex,” he said, bringing me out of my mental self-disgust. He held out his hand for a handshake. “I’m your step-brother.” Thank god, that could’ve been awkward. He sent me another grin. I smiled back.

“As you probably know, I’m Arianna,” I said, shaking his hand.

“We know.”

I turned to see where that unpleasant voice came from, and my eyes landed on a girl my age. She was tall with bright blond hair. I wondered idly if it was natural. Probably not. It was too much of a platinum color to be natural. She had the same eyes as her brother and mother; only hers had a cold penetrating look, unlike Alex, and kind-of her mother. Well, at least Mary didn’t look at me like I was the plague sent to infect their family.

“Anna!” Mary snapped. “That was rude!”

“Whatever.” She muttered, turning to walk away. Wow. Somebody was on their period.

After she left, Mary turned to me. “Sorry, hun, I don’t know what got into her.” I had to bite my tongue from saying I knew exactly what got into Anna, and that it was okay, because I got pretty bad when I was PMS-ing, too. “Anyways, it’s so nice to have you finally staying with us.”

I pursed my lips, trying to resist from telling her it wasn’t my fault I was never invited before. Which reminded me— why am I here in the first place?

“Yeah… okay. Well. Dick, would you mind telling me now why you found such sudden interest in me?” I asked, turning to face my father. He made a face at me calling him “dick”. Oh well, he can suck it, because that nickname isn’t going anywhere. Mary gasped at hearing me say Dick, too. Good grief, it’s like these people’s cuss words consisted of “poop” and “darn-it”. I rolled my eyes.

“Well, Anna actually gave me the idea,” My father started. “She was, uh, yelling about how I’m, uh, not her dad. And how I should get my own kid to boss around.”

I couldn’t help it. I burst out laughing. This Anna just went up a couple ranks in my book for that. Dick and Mary scowled at me.  Sent them my best innocent look. Clearly it wasn’t to innocent because Dick’s glare hardened. Alex, who I forgot was in the room, let out a low chuckle from the wall he was leaning against.

My father turned to him.

“Alex, why don’t you show Arianna her room? So she can put her stuff away.”

“Cool,” Alex said, a little to quickly. I rolled my eyes, but followed him when he started walking away. No way was I sticking around with Dick and his bitch of a wife.

He led me around the first floor, which consisted of a kitchen, TV room, dining room, an office, a few bathrooms, and the foyer— which was where I met the wondrous family I’d be staying with. Insert mental eye-roll. When we were going up the stairs, he spoke.

“So, Arianna. How do you like it so far?” Alex asked, breaking me out of my daydreaming about running away and going back to my mom.

“It’s just fabulous. I especially love how welcomed everyone’s making me feel,” I said sarcastically.

He grimaced. “Sorry about them. My mom’s really hard to impress when you first meet her. And Anna… well I actually don’t have an excuse for her. She’s just an overall peevish person.” I snorted. No kidding.

“So when’s school starting?” I asked, trying to change the subject from his overall bad-tempered family.

“Actually, it starts tomorrow,” he replied with a scowl.

I groaned. “Great.”

We stopped in front of a simple wooden door.

“This is your room,” he said, pushing it open. We stepped inside. I was temporarily blinded when we did. The walls were neon pink, with matching curtains covering the French doors that led to a small balcony. The bedspread was light pink with flowers covering it entirely. It looked like a fairy threw up in here.

“Gah! My eyes!” I cried, tossing my hands up to shield my eyes from this monstrosity that was my new room. “What the hell is this?!” I heard Alex chuckle from next to me.

“Wow, Anna really had fun decorating this room for you,” he said, unsuccessfully trying to conceal his laughter as a fit of coughs. He tossed my suitcase he’d been carrying onto the bed. He sat on the edge of the bed, watching me. I didn’t move. I stood rooted in my spot. I. Am. Not. A. Child. This is a freaking five-year-old girl’s room! Not mine!

Alex let out another laugh. I turned to him.

“Oh you think this is funny do you? Well, guess what. It’s not!” I exclaimed. Suddenly an idea crept into my head. I let out a sigh, hoping he would take it as me releasing my anger. Whatever that meant. “Whatever. So, show me your room?”

This got him to stop laughing. He sent me a seductive grin. “Why, of course,” he replied, standing up and leading m out of the room. I grinned at his back. Men, they’re so easy to lead on.

He stopped in front of another door, and held it open for me.

I stepped in, taking in the dark blue walls and messy floor. It’d have to do. I turned back to Alex, who stood in the doorway still. I sent him a flirtatious smile, and walked towards him.

“Nice room,” I murmured, putting my hands on his muscular shoulders. He smiled back. I had to admit, he had a nice smile. But before he had time to react, I shoved him a little, causing him to stumble out of the room. Slamming the door shut, I grinned, locking the door.

“Have fun in the pink paradise tonight Alex!” I called through the door.

His fist banged into the door. “No fair! Let me in! Arianna!” I ignored his cries as I turned on the lamp next to the bed. I plopped on his big bed, closing my eyes.

Sucker.
