"We need blood!", the doctor shouted.

Her blood pressure was dropping; her feet were calmy. Crystalloids and blood transfusions were pumped into her like milk cartons being queezed forcefully to the last drop. Uterotonics and tranexamic acid were introduced to help stop the bleeding, yet it persisted.

"The placenta is not out yet", shouted a theatre staff.

In one swipe of a finger, the doctor inserted his hands into the uterus to manually pull out the placenta, but some retained and she continued bleeding.

The only way to save her was to perform a hysterectomy.

The paper work was sent to Pastor Joe to be signed outside. All he care for, was for his wife to be saved even if it might they were never going to have more children.

His heart continued pounding in his chest, he clasped his face with his shaking hands as he began to pray earnestly for a miracle.

Following the surgery,  Nancy was placed in the intensive care unit as she had not woken up and her blood chemistry was in disarray.

Day in and day out,  Joe continued to hold Nancy's hand like how Jack held Rose's in Titanic. One time, Nancy started blinking then fully opened her eyes.

"Hey, where's the baby?"

"Honey, you are awake.", said the warm familiar voice of Joe.

"Baby Joe is doing very well now. He has been moved from NICU to the prematurity stable 1 and that's a good sign"

"Can I see him now?"

"I do not know about now. Would find out from the doctor when you can start moving or if he can be brought here."

After making a few enquiries, Nancy was giving the go ahead to see her baby at the stable. He looked so tiny with his tiny hands and feet. Tears of joy rolled down her face.  Seeing the smile of baby Joe washed away every ounce of worry.

The whole delivery had been a freakish hellish course of doom and they longed each day to escape the hospital. In the first week, baby Joe or Joey, came up with neonatal sepsis, but with treatment he got better. He was accepted,  liked and loved by not just his parents but the entire family and congregation.  To them, he was the Success Kid who had conquered the tight grip of prematurity.

A month afterwards, they paid all the hospital bills and signed all the discharge forms and were ready to get on with their lives. Nancy wanted to feel like royalty and decided to dress up like Kate Middleton on dicharge day. She wore a blue polka dots frock, a four inch suede pumps, had her brown eye popping, sleek makeup, stylish hairdo and luscious red lips.  Although, her belly had not shrinked away completely,  she looked remarkably refreshed and immaculate.

She cradled her newborn like a treasure in her arms and gingerly sat at the back seat of their SUV. But It seemed as though doom was always lurking in the corners for them. When Joe was reversing out to leave the parking lot, he striked an oncoming rickety car at its side.

The said car belonged to one Mr. Richards. He needed money to spray and do some renovations on his car already, so Joe hitting him was perfect timing for him. Right there, he held up Joe's trousers,  with no regard for who he might be, he demanded money.

Joe initially was hesitant to pay and momentaritarily jumped into the who is at fault game. But upon recalling all the ordeal they had been through the past month,  he realised that it was pointless arguing with a fool.   He gave him the money before any large crowd gathered.

They wasted no more seconds and drove home.
